(Bottle, Kulminator, Antwerpen, 19 July 2012) Black colour with frothy, pale brown head. Malty, roasted nose with lots of coffee, notes of chocolate, cacao and dark bread. Malty, roasted taste with coffee, cacao, dark chocolate and a finish with soft, creamy coffee and a generous cacao bitterness. Full body, soft and rounded mouthfeel. Balanced sweetness. Alcohol is overshadowed by coffee and cocoa, but shines through in a warming finish. Absolutely lovely!

Black color with a creamy tan head with good duration. Aroma has notes of ripe dark fruits, toasted malts, light coffee and some barrel notes. Flavor is slightly sweet, strong coffee with black chocolate, ripe fruits, mainly plumbs and raisins. Creamy, light sweet and coffee final with a mild duration.

Black with a creamy dense brown head. Aroma is roasted, chocolate, and acidic cherry like notes. Taste is medium sweet dark sugars and berries, acidic fruity notes. Dry finish with some sweetness and acidic fruity notes. Medium bodied, average carbonation. Lacks coffee notes but the acidity (infection) works quite well, more like an cherry infused imperial stout.

On tap at a bar in Germantown of Louisville some time after we left Sergio’s on December 26. I’m going to start this review by saying I’m pretty sure this was the bottom of the keg, and I really don’t think this is typical of this beer. The pour is a dark brown, lots of sediment. It’s almost like a glass of pure mud. There is no head and no lace. The aroma comes off a little fruity. There is a light sour bit to it, and it’s just not really good. The roast is drowned out as well and I’m not getting any mocha. The flavor is very similar. There is a little whiskey on the back end, but that’s about the whole difference. The mouth feel is a little light and it’s very flat. Just a couple of bubbles of carbonation that let the mud slide right off the tongue. The aftertaste is really fruity and sweet. I hope I might get to taste this again, this time without all of the sediment and as the beer was intended.

Small bottle from circa 2012. Pours inky black, small brown head, dissipates to a ring that laces well. Aroma is rich mocha and green peppers. Flavor follows, medium sweet and medium bitter, lots of coffee, a bit stale but that is likely my fault for sitting on this one. Green pepper notes present, as well as chocolate and dark roasted malts, plus some molasses. Full body, creamy mouthfeel. Solid, but I bet it was better in its prime.

Bottle sampled was a gusher. Pours pitch black with a thin tan head. Aroma of coffee, chocolate, and vanilla. Flavor was thick roasted coffee, dark chocolate, roasted malts, vanilla bean and had some notes of dark fruit. Oily texture, full body, dry finish.

Viscous piceous black pour with one finger of tight burnt chestnut brown head. Nose shows alcohol and fruit skins with some sweet Belgian esters. Some burnt raisin shows with a touch of coffee in the background. Hints of brandy show too. Rich and dense in the mouth. Warming with alcohol with some smooth coffee liqueur on the finish. Black fruit skins and black strap molasses/burnt sugar. Medium full bodied.

Pours black with a medium tan head. Aromas of chocolate, coffee, hazelnuts, vanilla, roasted malts. Taste is chocolate, coffee, hazelnuts, dark red berries, brown sugar. Mouthfeel is smooth with low carbonation.
