Aroma: toffee and strong malt, hint of alcohol with a touch fruity notes. Appearance:perfect brown with red highlights, pours clear with a perfect tan brown head leaving thick sheet lacing. Flavour: oh WOW malt with immediate hop balance (not expected but brilliant) followed by mocha toffee complexity. Palate: thick and nicely carbonated leaving the hop and mocha finish.

Reddish-brown colour, minimal off-white head. Aroma of caramel, dried fruits and wheatgerm with a little bit of chestnut and nuts. Taste is medium sweet, wheat, hay, some bitterness, yeasty. A ’cellar’ taste comes along and becomes stronger at the end.

Shared by someone at the Monte’s Krown tasting yesterday. Pours a clear amber with a thin tan head. Nutty in the aroma. Very smooth, very sweet taste. Walnuts in the taste, along with heavy malts. Decent.

500ml bottle. Aroma is malt, caramel and toffee. Appearance is very dark amber. Head is small, almost not existing white. Taste is very sweet with a very nice, almost creamy mouthfeel. Long sweet finish. Overall a nice bock, a little bit too sweet.

0,5 liter bottle bought in Jumbo, Santiago de Chile. Tasted while listening to "Illuminate-Eliminate" by the norwegian black metal band Mayhem. Pours a dark brown/mahogany color with three fingers of an off-white head that last for a while. Aroma is hugely malty, luscious and enticing showing a wide array of scents. Initially I got toasted grains and cereals. But this Doppelbock starts quickly showing strong notes of chestnuts, caramel, molasses, brown sugar, butter and nougat. Some pumpernickel bread and licorice are there too. Taste is predominantly sweet but well-balanced with toasted bitterness. Caramel, toasted rye bread, chestnuts, wood and crystallized sugar/honey (chancaca). Fantastic. More balanced, less sweet and less alcohol-driven than Paulaner Salvator. Texture is rich, oily (not quite syrupy) with a full mouthfeel. Alcohol is invisible on this one. Long finish but the aftertaste is a little dull compared to the enormous flavor. A world-class Doppelbock I wanted to try for years. An amazing experience to taste it while listening to Mayhem’s 2007 masterpiece "Ordo ad Chao" through headphones.

Bottle from my friend Bill (thanks Buddy!). Reddish brown with a super fizzy head that quickly fled. The aroma is pure toffee. The drinks is the same ... Sugar wafer sweet, topped with caramel. Bit thin. (#4588, 5/7/2012)

Oct 2006 from BA: This review is of the beer poured for me in Regensburg at the Andechers Kloster Hotel Bar (I think that was its name anyway). Lovely glass, lovely sight, almost jet black with a half inch of a tight creamy coloured head, which stayed with me and the pint (half litre really) until we had both finished. Aroma of toffee apples dipped in malt and then plunged into plum ram. The taste was wonderful, syrup like, but not sticky or jammy, just wonderful and right. Stuck to my mouth, giving the palate time to take in the taste and flavours, so complexed, it is hard to explain. If you have never tried it, try and find some, it is very, very good.

50 cl bottle, 1.75€, 7.1%, 1 month past expiration date. Dark red-mahogany color, clear, with a small creamy tanned head. Nose of toasted malts. Mouthful of toasted malts, dark bread. Taste is sweet due to the huge malts amount, balanced with a soft bitterness, Creamy to oily texture, soft carbonation, quite smooth. Full bodied, heavy, dense, thick. Doppelbock dunkel, interesting rare style.
