4.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20 trayns (246) - Beverly Hills, Michigan, USA - JAN 24, 2010@ Founders. This is a great impy stout. There is a feel and flavor totally unique to me. An irish cream alcohol content and creamy feel really rounds this feel off really well. This one is just a great overall drink.

19th February 2011 Opaque black beer. Tidy but short lived tan head. Slightly sour dark malts on the nose. Light smooth palate. Sweet dark malt. Traces of vanilla wood, bourbon and milk chocolate. All really well integrated. The wood gets stronger towards the semi dry finish. A lovely sweet barrel aged beer!

tap at Barcade: yeasty cookie dough and biscuit. has a nice full body that gives the quality of warmth and fullness. Chewy and silky, packed with licorice and brown sugar. slightly resinous finish. damn tasty.
4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20 bmerz (465) - Brooklyn, New York, USA - OCT 18, 2012
Draught 2010 vintage at Barcade. wow rich intense and drinking well though could easily last our even peak in a few years. Looks and drinks as a stout. Aroma is slightly lactic, light soy, a nice oxidized fortified wine element coming in, a bit of meat, and rich dark coffee roast. Flavor is very sweet, slightly cloying, with just enough bitterness which lasts with some burnt or tannin notes coming in. It is a bit harsh still on the palate. one hell of a beer.

Draft at barcade for the anniversary party. 2010 vintage. Pours a deep brownish black body with thin off white lacing. Aroma is sweet, sweet chocolate, molasses, and light smoke. Mouthfeel is medium with notes of sweet chocolate, slightly cloying, molasses, dark fruit, plum, black cherries, wood and very light smoke. Very nice just a touch too sweet for my personal preference. Still stellar.

On draft at Churchkey in D.C.
A: Dark brown at first. When held up to the light, the beer actually seems rather clear. Maybe a change of title is in order. There is a small head that leaves just a touch of lacing on the snifter.
S: Sweet malt, alcohol
T: This is decent beer, but I was pretty underwhelmed. Black Biscuit is a bit too sweet, and the alcohol is not only very present in the aroma, it is over-involved in the taste aspect as well. The body could be bigger and fuller, in my opinion. There is a sticky sweet quality to the beer that limits my enjoyment of this brew to one snifter.
M: Thinner than I expected, with an alcohol burn in the finish.
D: Overall, an OK beer. Perhaps the hype is derived from the rarity. I’m glad to have tried it.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 KickInChalice (842) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - MAR 5, 2012
From notes. First reviewed 4/6/2011. Served on tap at Local Option in an 8 oz. stange. From notes.
This pours molasses, nearly black. A small ring is the only head present due to a continuous pour form the tap. The small head actually retains fairly nicely. Spots of lace.
Molasses, caramel, figs, and burnt caramel malt wander into my olfactory system.
There is definitely a strong sweetness up front, with burnt sugar and molasses really driving the flavor. Roast and caramel malt add some further flavor, and then a nice blend of figs and other dark fruits provide even more depth. Some booziness sneaks in here and there.
The mouthfeel is slightly sticky with a very full body. Light to medium carbonation. Smooth, a little harsh and boozy at points.
Overall, Black Biscuit is very smooth and drinkable.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 TheAlum (4289) - Lisle, Illinois, USA - DEC 1, 2011
Draft on tap at Bavarian Lodge Event (Lisle, IL). I’m shocked I’ve never reviewed this. I’ve definitely had it. A bit confused here. Either way.. Rating 2800. Pours an inky black thick pour, deep and dark opaque black with decent frothy tannish head atop, dies to a ring and laces small. Aromas are rich barrel, oak abd Bourbon mix with roast and toast, sweeter toffee, vanilla, gentle spice. Wet oak, some more sweet toffee, touches of dark fruit and oranges. Caramel. Initial is fuller bodied offering a strong heat up front, Bourbon and oak mix in, some fierce heat, moving into a sweet toffee and roast, toast, and gentle carmelization. Gentle vanilla, oak, and spirit. Good roast, some more molasses, cocoa, and coffee. Gets sweeter and mellow into the back, luscious and rich, inviting for a warm winter evening. Touches of dark fruit, orange rind and gentle sweeter citrus, more lingering barrel, oak, vanilla, spirit and sweet sticky malts. Touches of spicy anise into the finish as it warms. Pretty nice beer with some good depth and layers to get through. Well done, perhaps a bit hot but I’ll attribute that to this likely being a very fresh batch, the one that will see bottles soon. Anise caught me a bit off guard, but didn’t detract as coffee, roast, and toast press on and stick.

draft at Ribco on 11/16/11. 10 oz. pour into a Founders etched snifter for $7.50 and I got to keep the glass, how sweet is that! coal black with just a hint of a fast fading tan head by the time it was served at my end of the bar. aroma of burnt, roasted malts and black licorice. this was served very cold, so had to let it warm a bit. flavor was boozy dark chocolate with roasted notes along with some oak, vanilla and molasses. low carbonation, medium to full mouthfeel. not quite the uber stellar beer I was hoping for, but still another very solid beer from Founders which I’d love to see bottled.
