4.9 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 20/20
Clown Shoes Hoppy Feet is a solid black ale with a huge, lumpy, tan head that stays put and leaves outstanding lacing. It turns into a ceramic, nitrogen-looking head. I’ve never seen a head like that from a bottle. It has an aroma of sweet malt, grass, flowers and a soft roastiness. It’s full bodied, super smooth and creamy with a clean, dry finish. The flavor is a perfect balance between soft roastiness and a botanical bitterness. There’s just a touch of sweetness that is erased in the bitter finish. The aftertaste is kind of ashy. Wow, I could drink a bathtub full of this. These Clown Shoes guys are really on the ball.

Fr0m a b0mber this p0ured a dark br0wn, nearly 0paque b0dy with a tall, fr0they light br0wn head that c0llapsed in chunks. The ar0ma was freshly h0ppy - citrus fruits, zest, tart tr0pical fruit, and a hint 0f pine. The flav0r had the additi0n 0f a light ch0c0latey malt. It finished dry, fruity, and bitter. Very g00d.

Nice hopp aroma, not over the top, with hint of coffee and roast, only subtle though. Taste similar, nothing harsh or in your face. Just subtle. Nice beer.

3.5 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
I was looking forward to this beer. It wasn't astounding cold, but as the bottle says, it gets good when it warns up. With a soft coffee after taste, this isn't a bad beer.

This is a very delicious black IPA. This is the most well-balanced black IPA I have had. Full of flavor with a perfect blend of Hops.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Absolutely gorgeous - looks like a freshly poured Coke. Nose had light citrus and a hoppiness that seems at odds with the appearance. Flavor much more in the IPA vein than the color would lead one to believe. Spectacular beer.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle. Nose light fruit/citrus and stronger pine, strong caramel with a little dust and earthy, roastier notes dotted with nuts. Very dark brown pour with a tight light brown head. Taste is dry and strongly bitter, strong choco with light nuts and medium-strong roast, but the latter just lasts and lasts, creamy-smooth with mocha and ashen tendencies, light tobacco. Medium pine and light grapefruit, some pith, good resinous character but otherwise not really a ton of oils or bite. Medium body is wonderfully creamy and silky, but at times a little watery. A balanced and clean offering something like a warm hug.

3.2 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
Bottled January 6, 2014.
Appearance: Black IPA, hoppy stout, whatever. This looks great. The jet black body supports a rocky dense tan head which persists for a bit.
Aroma: Pine and earthy hops are noticed strongly, sort of a pine tar aroma. Hints of milky chocolate are there and a hint of roast. The aroma is very mild though.
Taste: The malt base is mild with hints of chocolate throughout and powdered bakers chocolate prominent on the finish. Overlying that is a prominent piney presence, never getting very bitter though. This is balanced nicely but everything is muted.
Palate: Full-bodied with mild to moderate carbonation.
Overall: For the price that Clown Shoes offers this at I find that it’s hard to recommend this. The only reason I would consider it is due to the lack of black IPAs on the market, at least in the NJ area. Even so I would have an easier time recommending Victory’s Storm King for a similar, but bolder experience.
