UPDATED: APR 12, 2013 (bottle) pours a pitch black colour with a quickly-dissipating creamy dark brown head. aroma of oranges, dark rye bread, brown sugar and vanilla, chocolate fudge, light cherries, lingonberries, espresso, toasted malts, oak and treacle, awesome complexity. flavour is mostly dark bitter chocolate and espresso, with lots of toasted malts, fudge, a medium sweetness, some soy sauce and a light cherry tartness in the roasted-bitter finish, alcohol is expertly hidden. heavy-bodied with soft carbonation.

Barwa: czarna jak smoła, piana brązowa, drobno pęcherzykowa, bardzo szybko zanikająca. Gęste i oleiste.

Bottle from Yonkers, NY. Thicker, richer and darker than B.O.R.I.S. Aroma is dark malt and a mild roast component. Taste is the same; coats palate thickly and feels like dark syrup. Ruins palate. Does have a mild yet strange vegetative flavour which is subtly odd. But I also get some vanilla in the mix as well. Like it, but is probably just a touch less desirable than her younger brother.

Look: Syrupy pour with small, very thick, creamy and dark, chocolaty head. Has relatively fast, but smooth retention, leaves a very thick, thin layer that mostly diminishes over time - very little lacing (but good, fine when the layer was still present) as a consequence. Haven’t seen many as dark as this one, pitch black with brown hue.

Smell: Wonderful, the first thing I’ve noticed is the freshness from fruity/herbal hops and light dark wood berries sourness. Amounts of hops detected are surprising. The berries are accompanied by black currant, dry raisins and figs. All this makes a very fresh feeling. Then there is the deep roast, chocolate is dominant (mix of milk and dark) and mocha. A strong sweet backbone. Smell is full and fat but not stuffy - good counterbalance is made with fresh hops and berry esters. Also some faint alcohol crawls out when the beer warms up.

Taste: Pleasant medium sweetness with strong milk chocolate and mocha notes, that goes into even stronger dark roasted dynamics that end up in the medium-high bitterness. The bitter part starts with roast, chocolate notes and at the end goes dark roasted coffee, burned toast with light to medium hops to keep the harmony going - these make up a pleasant after-taste. In between there are still present light dark berry and currant sour notes with some dry fruits lingering on your lips. Strong hops come back every time you burp. Hint of alcohol present towards the end.

Mouthfeel: Full medium-heavy body, creamy enough, but not the fattest stout out there. Low-medium carbonation, suiting. Very light warming from the alcohol.

Overall: A massive one, good counterbalance with hops to the big dark malt character full of deep roast. Can’t wait to get my hands on the barrel-aged one.

350 ml on tap @ "Schouskjelleren". March 06, 2014 Beer from a shaker glass. Black in color with a thick creamy brown head and medium to low carbonation. Aroma is roasted malt, coffee, vanilla, molasses and some dark fruits. Tastes a bit sweet and malty with a nice and lasting bitter finish. A creamy sweet "coffee drink" with nice foamy curtains.

Bottle, 2011. Pour is deep brown with a small tan head. Aroma is of oatmeal, nuts, and chocolate. Flavor is similar with some dark fruits and booze thrown in. A bit flat and metallic, I think this bottle was past its prime.

Pours dark brown almost black. Little to no head. Slight vanilla over coffee aroma. Very chewy, oily mouthfeel. Sweet vanilla flavor up front, coffee finish that lingers longer than normal. Excellent.
