4.6 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
(Bottled, rated 2010-12-14) Almost black with a firm and lasting, light brown head. Intensive aroma with softly licoricey Impy meeting sour-wineous port. Red wine is emphasized in the sour, oaky-tannic flavor. The fine original beer is perhaps even too hidden, but nevertheless this is awesome stuff! A sophisticated and warming beer with no booziness.

2.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
Bottle - Pours dark cola color with a tan ring of head. Nose is boozy, sharp, and sweet, with dark ashy malt. Taste is smoke, ash, dry dark malt, and a light sweet booziness and a warm finish. Thin, slick, and low carbonation. Pretty limp.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
(Bottle) Black colour with frothy, pale brown head. Malty, roasted nose with black coffee, oak wood, liquorice, port wine, raisins, red fruit and dark chocolate. Malty, roasted taste with notes of black coffee, dark chocolate, raisins, roasted malt, oak wood and a finish with balanced coffee bitterness and a warming and vinous touch of port wine. Full body, with a certain sweetness. The barrel ageing works exceptionally well, the port wine character is clearly evident, but quite balanced, adding complexity to the beer rather than taking over the show. Lovely beer!

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottled. Poured deep brown with a short-lived, rich mocha head. The aroma picked up lots and lots of near-burnt coffee and Port wine.. pretty much as expected, with spicy, older vinous notes on the edges of the nose (well-aged).. the barrel cut through the sugars and roast well.. very nice! The flavor opened with tangy barrel and vinous notes, with well-roasted coffee following.. vinous warmth rose as the drink progressed.. finished with lots of burnt coffee roast, lightly-tangy Port barrel, and belly warmth. Heavier-bodied with low carbonation.. this wasn’t quite brilliant, but it sure was very good.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Dark beer with some garnet colors around the edges when held against the light. There was no pop when I released the cork, and the beer itself was was pretty still. Big sweet malt profile with molasses and brown sugar.
This is a very dry beer with some grassy hops, some red wine/port flavors and a long dry finish. This beer is better warmer. The alcohol is well hidden until the end, when it kicks you in the head. Nice specialty beer.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
375mL bottle, courtesy of Nisse666 (thanks a lot, Tomas), pours black with a medium tan / brown head. Aroma of port wine barrel, subdued roasted malt, and charcoal -- very heavy and liqueurish on the nose. Flavour is dominated by the port barrels, bringing out notes of port liqueur and red wine, followed alcohol and subdued roasted malts. The port barrels have totally overtaken this, and not for the better, as boozy liqueur notes dominate making it a bit difficult to drink. The complexity of the base beer seems to be obscured by the barrel aging. Still, nice effort, but not too enthralling.

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
August 25, 2012 - 375ml green corked & caged bottle shared by MesAndSim - not sure of the year, I think it has been laid down for a while. Pours brown-black with a fairly large creamy slightly frothy tan/light brown head - plenty of lacing, and even legs (4+). Aroma - dark and roasty - dry nutmeat, table cream, alcohol, dates & figs & even some black sour cherry- a bit boozy, but so appealing. Taste is a bit more acidic, the tart dark fruit comes to the fore, the roast is less apparent, although it does seem to have a brandy and chocolate mousse character gaining prominence - oily and I really get a lot of the tawny/crusty port, which is something that pushes my buttons. A little alcoholic, slick, mild carbonation, creamy mouthfeel, a bit sticky and thick, finishes with just a hint of scorched cork - lovely lovely lovely - this is really up my street, thank you so much for the share, Mes.
