4.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 rabba9 (115) - Chaska, USA - OCT 20, 2010
Bottle pours a rich black with a nice thick tan head. Aroma is highly complex, with hints of chocolate, coffee, dirt, grass, flowers, licorice, roasted malt, and smoke. Taste initially sweet, primarily chocolate and molasses with a floral and grassy bitter finish. Body and carbonation is medium-heavy. Incredibly complex and enjoyable. Avery continues to impress.

Intense bitter and sweet aroma. Black color and thick foam. Thin and oily on the palate. Strong aftertaste of hops.
3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 umich03jm (179) - Michigan, USA - APR 2, 2012
Pitch black pout with beige head. Roasty chocolate aroma along with some grassy hops. Slight bitter chocolate taste at the start then turns roasty. Nice dry finish where the hop taste lingers on your tongue. Really nice black lager. More mouthfeel than expected.
4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 superspak (778) - Michigan, USA - APR 1, 2012
22 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled May 2010. Pours crystal clear very dark brown color with a nice 2 finger dense dark khaki head with great retention that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Some nice spotty lacing on the glass. Aromas of big caramel, roasted malt, toasted biscuit, molasses, chocolate, light coffee, earthy hops, and a touch of dark fruits. Very nice aromas with good strength and complexity. Taste of chocolate, caramel, roasted malt, toasted biscuit, molasses, nuttiness, coffee, dark fruit, earthy hops, and herbal spiciness. Fair amount of spicy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, roasted malt, chocolate, coffee, and herbal hops on the finish for a good bit. Very nice and lush malt balance with the hop bitterness. Medium carbonation and body; with a very creamy and slightly slick mouthfeel. Alcohol is very well hidden with hardly any warming noticed at all on the finish. Overall this is a highly excellent black lager from Avery. Great flavor balance and complexity; and very smooth to drink for the alcohol level.
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Svesse (4392) - Hässelby, SWEDEN - MAR 30, 2012
(Bottle) Very dark brown colour, almost black, with hints of ruby when seen through light. Rocky beige head, leaving traces of lacing. Malty, roasted nose with chocolate, dark rye bread, coffee, caramel, dried fruit and a touch of blueberries. Malty, roasted taste with notes of black coffee, cocoa, dark rye bread, raisins, soy sauce and a generous piney bitterness in the finish. Almost full body, viscous mouthfeel. A certain malt sweetness shining through. Quite tasty and very nice.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 KajII (464) - Macon, North Carolina, USA - MAR 17, 2012
Bottle. The pour was a thick dark brown with a large (2-3 finger) cream colored rocky head that lasted throughout, producing some excellent sticky lacing.
The aroma was of burnt chocolate malts, grassy hops and a leathery yeast with notes of chocolate, licorice and a smidgen of dark fruit (plums and raisins).
The taste was sweetly bitter and rather malty with a note of chocolate early on and then progressed into this smooth bitter taste with hint of licorice, a small dose of dark fruit and a nice amount of hops at the end. The flavor lasted an average duration with a bitter malty smoothness settling nicely on the taste buds.
Mouthfeel was medium in body and creamy yet dry in texture with a medium carbonation.
Overall a creamy and malty brew with a nice mild hint of hops which does a great job of setting off the malty sweetness...
3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 keanex (345) - Williamstown, New Jersey, USA - MAR 15, 2012
Poured into a lager glass from a 650ml bottled bottled in May of 2010.
A: Almost opaque garnet with a moderately sized dense and creamy messy tan head that clings to the glass as it shrinks.
S: Sweet chocolate and roasted malts, this is well past the hop point unfortunately. Still it smells good.
T: Right away I’m hit with a sweet chocolate that blends well with the roasted malts ending very sweet with a caramel finish. This is like the bastard child of an imperial stout and a barleywine at this point.
M: Syrupy body with almost no carbonation.
O: Shame this isn’t fresh but with it being a one-time brew I had to try it. It’s still worth trying, just don’t expect any hop presence at all.

The way Avery meshed in the hops is amazing on this beer; very well balanced and clean to the taste.
