COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Barrel Aged Barleywine. 11% ABV, 60 IBUs. Loosely based off our 2000th brew at our production facility,we revived this hybrid American / English Barley Wine for a special treat. Coming out of the tanks we aged it in barrels previously used for Bourbon County Rare Stout (Pappy Van Winkel 23 Year) to add another layer of complexity.

Note: The original release of this beer (2010) was done in regular bourbon barrels. The 2011 and bottle release saw the use of the barrels formerly used for Bourbon County Rare. We are not seperating these as I do not believe the bottles will clarify this. The original release also saw an 11% ABV, with the bottling seeing closer to 13.4%

Pours a deep red/brown, showing only the slightest translucence when held up to a lightbulb. The head is actually brown, but dissipates VERY quickly. The aroma is gorgeous, bread, fruit, candy, oak, slight whiskey. The flavor is almost exactly the same, bready, fruity, oaky, and a little whiskey. The whiskey in this so subtle, it’s perfect. Not like so many barrel aged beers where it tastes and smells like a shot of bourbon was poured into the beer. Thick in body, sticky mouthfeel. The finish is whiskey warming, some pine and resin. Probably the best barley wine I have ever had, and one of the best beers I have had.

Thanks to Sean T and the Chicago crew for the sample. Wonderful rich sweet aroma. Subtle fruit with notes of candy and maple. Mwonderful sweetness. Loads of vanilla and maple. Sherry like sweetness with loads of caramel and summer fruits. The best beer I have had in quite sometime.

Bottle @ home, courtesy of fortsambo- a very generous, local friend. Thanks for providing this for JetsonFest II. Dark reddish purple appearance with a disappearing, cream colored head. Really, very nice caramel/toffee/whiskey, oaky, sweet caramel, red fruity aroma with no sign of booze. Quite good so far. Thick dark caramel malty, rich chocolate, super smooth whiskey/oaky/vanilla, dark red fruity flavor. Tons of caramel, chocolate, and whiskey and you can definitely see the BCS Rare influence but I think I may prefer FW Abacus and Kuhnhenn BBBW. Really a fine beer- glad this made an appearance at JetsonFest II.

Bottle split with mcberko. Pours solid black no head. Aroma of vanilla, bourbon, liqueur, roasted malts. Flavour as above, dark fruits, lots of vanilla. Full bodied, well balanced, beautiful.

22 oz. bottle, pours a dark, dark amber brown with a tiny ring of tan head. Aroma of bourbon barrels, vanilla, sweet sherry-like liqueur, caramel / toffee, and a sort of English malt character. Flavour is incredibly rich and complex - with vanilla, dark fruits, sherry liqueur, caramel and toffee, bourbon barrels, and subtle English malt qualities. Quite complex, though quite cloying in sweetness. Delicious in small quantities. Very good, though too sweet and certainly overrated.

Initial rating FoBAB 2011 and since in bottle: Deep ruddy brown with some reddish highlights topped by a small but lasting off-white head with good lace and some oily legs. The aroma has a big vanilla bean , bourbon, oak, roast, toast, golden molasses, fruit cake and rye bread vapours. Earthy and leathery esters as well. The taste starts with mind numbing sweet malts and bourbon overtones supported dark fruits, dark breads, mild oak, cleansing alcohol, and constant mild herbal hop bitterness. Much like a classic English Barley wine, the sweetness and old school oxidization adds to a be rounded and complex palate. The mouth feel is wonderfully sticky, oily, lush and warming... a great sipper! This is so YUMMY, my favorite at the fest and the bottle did nothing to change my mind. GET YA SOME!!

22oz poured into snifter, shared with great company. This is unbelievably good. Aroma is wicked. Toasted marshmallow, bourbon, vanilla, biscuit, caramel. Head is gone in 5 seconds. Beautiful hue; reddish mahogany. Flavor is outstanding. Never tasted a bourbon barrel aged brew that’s so balanced. Chewy caramel, toasted coconut, exquisite bourbon (thanks Pappy!), raisin, charred oak, dark chocolate. New top 5 beer.

Big thanks to whoever shared this fantastic BW with me at Hunahpu day. I really was impressed by the complexity of rich malt flavors, from plums and cherries to a molasses sort of syrupy quality. I had no idea this was supposed to be anything special when I drank it, but it was really good.

I missed out on this one a few weeks ago, and then my friend traded his remainder of bottles. For shame! Shock! Horror! Would I ever get a chance to try this one? Who knows! Then the almost unthinkable happened! Someone brought one to a tasting!

The pour was a hazy muddy red color with a small light brown head, almost wispy. Very little carbonation. Aroma was smooth, balanced dark fruits, with a toasted malt character with notes of vanilla and subtle bourbon notes. Flavor was... amazing. This one was so smooth, I mean SMOOTH. This was so enjoyable sipping away. Butterscotch, fruity, yum.
