Deep ruby colour, thick creamy head is beige. The nose is freshly hopped, slightly citrusy, pol leny and mangoish. Some apricots. Sweet, toffeyish and creamy malts, loads of raisins and dried peaches, strawberry notes and a hint of licorice. Light bready roastedness, milk chocolate and just a hint of alcohol in the finish. Resiny, balancing bitter finish. Silky, very smooth texture, full body. Lovely, complex beer with amazing drinkability and warming strength.

First smell..regular old barleywine type thing going on..but man. The Taste..starts off like some type of black beer i.e. a black lager or black ipa..then i get the barleywine..then a sour finish? One of the most unique beers i’ve had the pleasure of drinking. Cheers to Sierra Nevada!

750 mL bottle. Looks and smells like a stout. As for the taste: it’s not a stout, but it’s not. barleywine either. American strong black ale? Some roast, but also some booze. Very smooth and creamy. As it warms it does become something approximating a black barleywine. Nice beer.

On tap. Dark roasted malts, toffee, kinda burnt. Light tan head with plenty of lacing. Black. Taste is bitter and slightly sweet.

750 ml bottle got in a trade with Adam Jackson awhile back. Thanks for the opportunity. The tulip shows a dark black color with a tiny layer of tan head. Nose is rich toffee smelling malt with light pine hop notes. Starts malty as a Barley Wine does with the pine like hop in the middle of the sip. The finish has a roasted malt that would make you think of a stout. Secondary flavors of figs and pine hops. ABV is totally hidden from the age. The texture of the brew is amazing at this point as well. Absolutely delish.

This is on tap in Jan 2013. Very unbarleywine-like nose. Super cacao flavour with a dry pumpernickel finish. Super savoury. Very impressive

Tasted on 12/20/12 from a corked and caged bottle purchased at Discount Liquors in Milwaukee quite a while ago. Pours very dark mahogany with a thick tan head that slowly recedes to average lace, leaving very thick lace along the inside of the glass. The nose is full of caramel, toffee, brown sugar, and molasses, classic barley wine with a bit more dark roast than normal, and just a light touch of cola. The flavor has some sweetness with all of the caramel, molasses, toffee, and brown sugar noted on the nose, with a bit of nicely roasted bitterness on the back end and just a touch of vanilla. The body is full with average carbonation and a long caramel, brown sugar, molasses, and nicely bitter roasted finish.

This one is holding up well. Still a big hop presence even with the age. I’m still sitting on one for long term. Kind of a style bender for me. Fresh it was like a black IPA but with some age the malts are starting to come forward. Decent beer worth the try

Good barleywine here. The last of this series for me to try and it is quite nice. Really rich nutty, leather, caramel, light toast, plums. Dry robust finish. Nice.
