4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
UPDATED: MAR 24, 2015 Bottle at Monks many times. July 2012. Pours a dark ruby brown. No head just a playful foam. Deep, thick and wonderful. Liquid raisins. Molasses. Bourbon barrel flavors. Melts on the tongue and slides down the throat. Despite the rich thickness it finishes perfectly smooth. Perfection. Warm caramel apple. Vanilla bourbon. Smooth like a well aged whisky. My favorite brew out of Dogfish Head. Not scared to give it one of my highest ratings. Tremendous! UPDATE: Now finding on draft for the first time. Feels fresher, fruitier, and less complex than the bottle version I prefer. Interestingly the high ABV reads to me as a peppery hop bite, not high alcohol. It still packs a punch though after sipping this for 20 minutes. I like it a lot but would probably rate it around a 3.9 - though I will leave my higher rating up for my previous bottle experiences!

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
12 oz bottle. Pours a dark reddish brown with a light head that dissipates quickly. Aromas of caramel malts and cognac. Flavors of brown sugar, sweetened raisins, stick sweet malts, and alcohol. Very warming. Nice enough for a beer that carries a wallop three times it’s size.

3.2 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
On tap @ HO1K Beers. Pours a dark Iced tea brown color with a thin white ring. Aroma of light tart fruit. Taste is of dark fruit with some whiskey notes. Not as harsh or alcohol laden as some others. Decent flavors without too much alcohol masking the taste. Enjoyable.

Pours a nice dark blackish amber color. Aromas of dark fruits, and some other hints, maybe bourbon, maybe coffee. Flavor is a bittersweet, malty, and drinkable as hell.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pours a ruby/brown with a fair off white head. Fruity aroma, raisins mostly. Sweet, tongue coating roasted malt, raisins and figs, merlot wine, smokey and boozy, yet smooth and well balanced. Another excellent sipper from Dogfish.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 14/20
Poured into a small snifter, this huge beer in a little glass is already showing its brawn in the aroma. Boozy, sweet and heady with the combination, the monstrous notes of burnt caramel and dried fruits are a bit intimidating. The snifter is full of burnt sugar, the light from the room glancing through and streaming copper sunshine into the foot of the glass. The latte-hued, soapy foam present in the first moments is eagerly consumed by the heaviness of the body.
- My first taste is sweet...so sweet that I’m put off at first, but within just a few small sips the sweetness is comfortable, the heat of the booze is tempered and the brew becomes quite flavorful and delicious. Dark caramel, raisins and leather are apparent in the aroma as it warms, and a hint of vanilla through it all clinches my love for this beer. The carbonation is obvious and delivers well despite the creaminess laid out on my tongue. A sensual nibble on my lips demonstrates the high alcohol, but this is a beer with a booze accent, and not the other way around. How refreshing that is! I could blame my trek from too sweet to perfectly marvelous on the high ABV, but I have not gotten far enough into the beer to say anything of the sort. I’m still drinking this carefully, slowly and with respect. It’s a sipping brew and one that demands patience, and at the same time, your full attention.
- In all honesty, I am not a fan of this brewery. There are only two that I can think of that I truly enjoy. This, as new as it is to me, just so happens to be one of them. Try it. I dare you.

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Pours semi clear reddish brown with basically flat off-white head. Aroma of raisins, figs, dates, more raisins, muscovado, alcohol, port wine, some more raisins... This is going to be sweet... Taste is very boozy up front, slightly tart with red grapes, followed by a funky sweet alcohol warming finish. Burns the lips... Body is surprisingly light, somewhat sticky, with a fair amount of carbonation.
Picked up in Chicago and drank on the spot - wished I had held on to this and let it age for about five years, think that would help it immensely.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Dark amber pour with a small tan head quickly dissapating. Aroma of malts, ripe fruits, caramel, slightly doughy and toffee. Taste of malts, plums, raisins, caramel, toffee and vanilla. Full bodied, medium carbonation, boozy sweet raisin finish that lasts forever. Delicious excellent beer!
