COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Men døm selv.

Hornbeer’s dry-hopped ’impy’ aged on oak and walnut casks. ABV on my bottle, with BBD May 7th, 2025, is 10%. Almost non-lacing but still dense and stable, creamy, cappuccino-like, tan head over an opaque jet black beer. Lovely, complex bouquet of mocha ice cream, cappuccino, black chocolate, ’Haagse hopjes’, lovely wet wood mixed in beautifully, black pepper corns, wet leather, old walnuts, salmiak, toasted brown bread, subtler hints of cognac, vanilla, espresso beans, dried orange peel, dry tree leaves, moldy hazelnut shells, cured meat, shoe polish, ’haemoglobin’ iron - in all, nothing exceptional for a big wood-aged imperial stout, but everything in perfect balance with each other and technically perfect (no off-flavors at all even at letting it warm up to room temperature - and it’s a hot day today). Same for the taste: lots of flavor components all of which are to be expected in this style, but all in harmony. There is a hint of candied sweetness at first (raisins, dates, even candied cherry) but in a very short-lived and subtle way, largely making room for beefy umami flavors in instants, while a soft, dim, background sourishness of roasted barley develops as an undercurrent carrying forward the other flavors. Carbo is soft and perfectly fit for the style, mouthfeel is evidently very thick and ’fatty’; lovely caramelly malt sweetness in the middle gains deeply nutty flavors quickly as well as a toasted bittering edge, before eventually shifting to a mocha-like roasted bitterness, which in all does remain fairly soft, yet effective in supporting the peppery hop bitterness in the end. Malt sweetness keeps creeping through as a balance against the bitterness and does a wonderful job at that, while subtle woody notes appear at the back, oaky and drying, adding some tannins for extra flavor and retronasal aroma. A dash of warming, brandy-like alcohol is thrown in but only at the very end, where it bothers nothing else and simply fulfils its duty as a warming factor in this essentially heart-warming beer style. The back label boasts many awards - gold at the Brussels Beer Challenge of 2012 to name just one - and usually I don’t take those too seriously, but in this case I can see how they came about: this is not just the best Hornbeer I had to date, it is among the top imperial stouts from Scandinavia in general. It has balance, nobility, opulence, depth and beauty - this is a great achievement in my opinion, though it remains fairly ’classic’ in its general make-up as a wood-aged imperial stout. Highly recommended.

Black color, noticeable beige head. Bitter dark chocolate aromas, sweet hints of vanilla. Sweet chocolate taste with some wood, smoke. Hops adds to the bitter, dark roasted finish.

Butelka 0.5l (23.07.2025). Piwo czarne, nieprzejrzyste.

Haut taux d’alcool discret. Texture laiteuse/onctueuse, corps rond à tendance moyenne. Très faible carbonatation. Excellent stout.

Pitch black, completelly non-transparent. Two to three fingers tanned, almost brown, frothy head, which is quite persistant. Awesome lacing. In aroma a lot of beautiful dark notes: bitter chocolate, milk chocolate, chocolate cake, sweet coffee, brownie. From the glass has also some sherry, port wine, rum notes. Very rich aroma. Taste is a bit similar, but it’s much more rough, much taugher. Chocolate is definately moved to the background. Coffee is on the first plan. Coffee with some wooden, roasted, toasted notes. Has also a touch of dark bread and burned cake bottom. Quite big bitterness in the aftertaste, but it’s not overwhealming. I was hopping for much thicker and dense mouth feel. Unfortunately it isn’t. Perfectly low carbonated. Alcohol is perfectly covered. Very good beer, but it’s not my top level choice.

Piana beżowa, drobna, nieduża. Barwa prawie czarna, nieprzejrzysta, z brązowymi refleksami. W posmakach szwajcarskie czekoladki, trufle, orzechy, porto i wanilia.
Przeszkadza charakterystyczna żelazista nuta chmielowa i nieco rzadka konsystencja.
Ps.
Data przydatności do spożycia do października 2024 sugeruje, że piwo spędziło "na leżaku" półtora roku stąd zapewne pięknie ułożony alkohol i nuty porto, rodzynek.

Pours pitch black with medium head. Aroma: dominating dark roasted malt, bitter chocolate, coffee. Taste: very heavy on the dark roasted malt side, followed by coffee and bitter chocolate. Maybe a touch of honey, but countered very well with long and hoppy finish. ABV well hidden. Apart the clear roasted malt dominance the beer is pretty smooth and drinkable.

Bottle 500 ml. Dark brown, almost black color, good tan foam. Aroma powerful: chocolate, coffee with brandy, sweet molasses and licorice, prunes, burnt, dark and caramel malts, floral, honey and woody notes. Taste: dark bitter chocolate, coffee, brandy, licorice, honey, oak and walnut, port wine with prunes, strong hop bitterness. Great stout!
