COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Combining the refined body of a Belgian style witbier with the refreshing bite of a hop forward IPA, this ale puts a new spin on the idea of collaborative brewing. Working from a single shared recipe, Boulevard and Deschutes have created two separate brews, more than 1,600 miles apart. To the traditional witbier spices of coriander seed and orange peel they’ve added sage and lemongrass, giving the ales subtle herbal notes which perfectly complement the pungent hop aroma and full, fruity mouthfeel. Hints of pepper linger in the dry, clean finish.

750ml bottle. Lord, this has one of the nicest aromas I’ve ever had the pleasure of whiffing. Aroma of grapefruit, orange zest, wheat, coriander, and grassy/floral overall. Very balanced aroma full of texture. Massive, foamy white head on top of a limeish color when poured. Decent lacing from the foam, not amazingly so however. Most of the head dissipates but a tiny head remains while drinking. Tastes of orange zest, grapefruit, lemon, sage, and a surprising amount of wheat flavor to it. The finish isn’t particularly bitter or strong, but the flavor does linger on the tongue for a good while, a bit wheaty probably more than a usual bitter IPA bite. I guess overall I’m surprised by the wheat in the beer, but the balance overall is pretty good and the hints of spice at the end go well with the wheat. I’d highly recommend this beer, probably the first Smokehouse Series I’ve had that I really, truly loved. I’m a little hard pressed to call this an IPA straight-up, the finish and overall wheat flavor as well as the sage kind of take away from what I’d usually expect from an IPA flavor, but that being said this is probably one of the best beers I’ve had that have called themselves IPA, ha! 7.4% alcohol.

A - Cloudy golden orange body with a 3 finger white head. Pretty good lacing left behind as well. S - Clove and coriander, musty Belgian yeast, confectioner sugar, oranges, herbal hops. T - Lemon and minty herbal hops followed by a creamy orange flavor. Clove, and coriander accent the chewy yeasty center. Sweet tropical fruit bleed through close to the peppery finish. M - Soft and delicate at first then moves to a peppery finish. Full bodied. Boulevard loves the citrus when it comes to this family of styles and it works well here. Solid amount of spice and plenty of herbal and tropical flavors running through the yeast and malt. Serving type: bottle 09-10-2011

This is my first trip into white IPA territory. The aroma was a mild mix of hoppy citrus and more distinct lemon character. I guess that is why it appears to be a mix of IPA and witbier. The color was a clear golden with a white fizzy head until the end. This leaned toward a wheaty IPA with some spice that reminded me of some rye IPA’s. This was also easy to drink. I need to revisit this style before making an opinion.

Bottle. Pours cloudy pale golden amber with a nice off white head. Aroma is dry hoppy piny fruity citric and malty. Flavor is much like the aromas, very nice bitter touch, spot on. Good dry hoppy finish.

Very hazy amber beer. Big white head. Light palate, starts fluffy but turns crisp and dry. Seltzer mineral backdrop, vaguely bretty. Vibrant sherbetty fruits - an equal balance of orange, lemon, grapefruit, mango and peach. Dry minerally finish with bitterness kicking in. Lovely!

Bottle shared Thorpe429. Thanks Mike! The beer is hazy and yellow, with a finger of white head that leaves ample lacing. The aroma brings coriander, yeast, hops. The flavor is decent, offering more spices than hops. The feel is medium bodied, with a lingering spicy finish. I like the aroma a bit more than the taste. Overall, a pretty tasty brew. Poured from a 750ml caged and corked bottle into a pint glass. Batch: 2011-3 A: A slight hazy straw with some floating sediment. Nice 2 finger white head that is airy on the pour with nice retention. Sticky lace follows me down the glass. S: The yeasty witbeir quality is shining through some nice peppery spices. Little bit of citrus hops at the backend. T: Same as the nose, but it is lighter on the funky yeast and bigger on the hops. Has a mild bitter finish. M: Crisp and clean with a light body. Nicely carbonated. O: I enjoyed this version much more than the Deschutes version as I got more hops in this one and it drank closer to the style of "White IPA" IMO. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 08-29-2011

Bottle. Pours a cloudy gold with a large creamy white head leaving good sticky lacing along the glass. The aroma is yeast floral hops and orange peel. Thin mouthfeel with a strong lemongrass and light fruit with bitter finish. Hides alcohol well, a good IPA from Boulevard.

The Deschutes version may be a tad less aggressively spiced, but both share a complex assortment of flavors. Pepper, coriander, sage, orange and lemon, wheat, and grass. Very nice.
