From label: 2011. Malty and complex, this big beer has a strong caramel backbone supporting oak and whiskey flavors with hints of dark fruits. The nose wafts coconut, toffee and a smooth hint of alcohol. The flavor and aroma merge, becoming one after a single sip. There is a touch of bitterness and it will age well. ----------------- Additional notes (not on label / from brewer): Dry Dock Brewery will only produce 120 cases of this beer. it will be released the first week of October. Bligh’s Barleywine Ale will be only the second seasonal beer that Dry Dock has bottled. Its first, Apricot Blonde, came out in June and will be off the shelves by the end of September. A third seasonal, Wee Heavy Scotch Ale, is slated for release on November 14. All are sold in 22-ounce bomber bottles.

This is the barleywine that all other barleywines will be compared to throughout my beer life. Amazing nose, oak, barrel char, fruits, bourbon, malt and sweet sweet nilla’. Good lawrd this taste amazing, way better than King Henry in my opinion. The taste follows the nose. Perfect viscosity and coating. Carbonation is spot on as well. Damn this is a fine beer.

Aged 3 years (2012 edition). Murky deep brown with no head. Lovely deep aroma of date and plum and gentle barrel notes. Smooth and lovely sweet flavor of light caramel, playing up some date and raisin, a little booze, a little coconut, a little oak. Smooth and clean and fruity and sweet and dark.

Bottle thanks to Bruce. It pours cloudy deep brown with a decent beige head. The nose is sweet, candy, caramel, big toffee vibe, earth, cocoa, vanilla, fudge and coffee cake. The taste is sweet, slick, toasty brown sugar, booze, vanilla, big toffee action, nougat, wood, fudge, chewy malt and some warming finish. Medium - full body and moderate carbonation. Sweet, yes, but very enjoyable nonetheless. Nice one.

Enjoyed at an all barley wine tasting at Travis’s house on February 21. Pour from a 22 oz bottle. The pour is a cloudy mahogany with a finger of beige head leaving some light lace. The aroma is pretty complex actually. There are good notes of caramel, toffee, dark fruits, and a little whiskey burn. There is a nice oakiness on the back end. The flavor is very similar. Great fruit, toffee, whiskey, and a hint of vanilla. There might be a hint of oxidation, but it’s not really prevalent at all. The mouth feel is decently viscous and oily with a soft carbonation and a lingeringly hot aftertaste. Not too bad

Botle @ ZEBF 2015. Barley wine with a heavy focus on caramelly vanilla and dark fruit, both in aroma and in taste. Good one.

Bottle @ Zeebra 2015, small sample. Slight hazy amber to copper color, short head. Aroma of caramel and toffee, slight fruity. Soft sweet in taste, soft bitterness as well. Not as overly sweet as some barley wines can be, but more focussed on the malts. Nice stuff.

2012 bottle. Hazed murky red brown body with a soft carbonation. Booze nose with some pineapple and toffee. Christwagons this is smooth. Raisin and plum notes with a mild tobacco flavor. Lingering chocolate covered cherry and booze in the end.

Bottle thanks to Tom. Pours a cloudy brown with small beige head that leaves spotty lacing. The aroma is strong roast, toffee, vanilla. Medium mouth, sweet roast, dark fruit, candy sugar, vanilla, light booze finish, really enjoyed this one.

Bottle at RBWG ’15 Grand Tasting @ Coppertail, thanks to whomever shared this one, 21/02/15. Rich amber with a moderate beige covering. Nose is rich fruitcake, spice, toffee, dates. Taste comprises light barrel, caramel, fruit cake, toffee, dates, sweet licks. Full bodied, oily feel, light warming alcohol in the close. Ok barley wine.

22oz 2014 9.4% bottle. Poured a deep cloudy super dark blackish brown with a smaller piss foamy head. Aroma is vanilla, toffee, molassess, dried sugary dark fruits, barrel and a slight hint of Scotch. Medium to full body, soft to almost non carbonation and sort of a flat body. Flavor is nice but doesn’t live up to the aroma. Notes of butterscotch, toffee, molasses, dark fruits and scotch. Not digging the mouthfeel on this but it’s probably just me as I’m going through some shit right now and haven’t even eaten in 30 hours or so.

Bottle shared during the RBWG 2015 Grand Tasting. Pours clear amber with a foamy off-white head. Sugary sweet with lots of caramel, bready malts, toffee. Full bodied with fine carbonation. Warming finish, sticky, with lots of gooey ripe fruits and further caramel. Tasty though not especially nuanced.
