Small Batch Series
Also dubbed Batch No 1 in this new experimental series from Samuel Adams, Third Voyage is a Double IPA and it uses Cascade hops from New Zealand and the Pacific Northwest. It is piney, powerful and filled to the brim with floral and edgy hops.

maltdog (587) - USA - JAN 4, 2012
Dense ecru foam floats atop clear teak beer. A lavishly resinous nose spotlights grapefruit-orange, herbal and grassy scents... notably more enthralling than Cascade’s normal one-note solo. Flavorwise, a spicy slap of Fruit Loops hops fades to a kiss of silky malt, the intensity of which compares to barleywine or Scotch ale. Sensually smooth and slick buxom body, and the bracing bittersweet finish shifts to a manly bitter/caramel aftertaste and smoldering ethanol elan. ’Though I would prefer more ellubient carbonation and less oppressive caramel, this rates as a champion among ales.

Hophead22 (2392) - Redlands, by way of Wisconsin,, California, USA - MAY 30, 2012
12oz bottle. Rating #245. Clear dark amber pour with a big light beige head that left some good lacing on the glass. Nice aroma, big and piney with a slight earthiness. Pretty big bitterness, especially upfront, but it also has a pretty bold aftertaste, with more pine to finish it off. (2391)

MadRobin (176) - Silver Spring, USA - MAY 28, 2012
Poured from 12 ounce bottle. Clear, reddish copper with two finger tan head and excellent lacing. Aroma of pine, orange, grapefruit and caramel. Taste of sweet caramel malt, orange, grapefruit and pine. Very well-balanced but leaves a bitter aftertaste. Full body and high carbonation yields a wonderful mouthfeel. Wonderful beer while you're sipping it, but due to the unpleasant, bitter aftertaste, not so wonderful after you've stopped. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

keanex (341) - Williamstown, New Jersey, USA - MAY 28, 2012
Poured into a Duvel tulip glass from a 12 ounce undated bottle from the IPA Hopology 12 pack.

A: Clear dark amber body but only a very thin light tan head with poor retention.

S: Grassy and citrus hops, semi-sweet smelling and rather thick smelling.

T: This beer isn’t shy about it’s piney hop profile, almost right away the pine cuts through the semi-sweet malt body like a knife as a floral hops flavor finishes the beer drying it out.

M: Medium-thick bodied beer with mild carbonation.

O: This is a solid IIPA, but nothing I would buy again.

Nice example of the style - malty but the ABV warms the hops nicely. Very nice deep copper color. Bread, carmel, sugary and hoppy! Nice lacing and huge creamy head. Near perfect!

Bottle, poured a copper color, medium head. Aroma of pines, and floral hops, and some malts. Medium bitterness. Palate is on the creamy side. Bitter finish. Pretty good stuff.

bytemesis (150) - Sunnyvale, California, USA - MAY 25, 2012
Bottle. Pours clear orangish amber with a small tan head with good staying power and decent lacing. Smell is dominated by citrus and pine, with a bit of roasted malt as well. Taste is more piney, with some citrus notes and a slight malt backing; aftertaste starts sweet and becomes bitter in the distant finish. Very satisfying.

burg326 (1105) - Florida, USA - MAY 25, 2012
12 ounce bottle part of mix pack, poured a light redish orange color, aroams of some caramel, pine, touch of pepper, and some floral hops. Flavors are the same as aroma, enjoyable outside cooking on the grill.

Block (864) - West Lafayette, Indiana, USA - MAY 24, 2012
Amber pour with almost no head. Nice aroma of hops, citrus, lemon, orange. Some fruit. Flavor is pretty much straight IPA. A nice balance of sweetness and bitterness. For Samuel Adams this may be considered a DIPA, especially when compared to some of their other IPA offerings, but to many other breweries this is simply a solid IPA.

glennmastrange (1638) - hobe sound, Florida, USA - MAY 22, 2012
Bottle. Moderate malt and hop aromas of roasted, caramel and pine, light soap and musty for the yeast, with notes of date, brown sugar, pepper, boozy alcohol and solvent. Head is large, frothy light beige with fair yet sticky lacing and is mostly diminishing. Color is medium clear red. Flavor starts lightly to moderately sweet and acidic, then finishes lightly sweet and acidic and moderately bitter. Palate is medium, a little slick with a carbonation between soft and lively and has a lightly alcoholic finish. A nicely balanced and very smooth DIPA.

thicksuds (280) - Massachusetts, USA - MAY 21, 2012
rating as a double ipa this comes in not so good, just not strong enough, it would stand up as a regular ipa and rate better....just not enough to it, decent hops, bitter, but missing that real potency, abv slightly detectable.
