The brewer allow the beer to macerate with fresh cherries, raspberries and cranberries. After this maceration in oak, the beer re-ferments in the bottle. The result is RODENBACH Caractère Rouge, an exceptional RODENBACH with fruit maceration and a 7% alcohol volume. The brew is more than unique and extremely exclusive, as only 900 75-cl bottles were produced. Geunes serves this wilful beer as part of his other unique range of beer varieties in his restaurant, ’t Zilte, at the Antwerp MAS museum.

Bottle gift from SJ. Wow! I’m not crazy about the style, but it was really good. Notes of cranberry, sour / tar fruits, wood and zest. Finish was bubbly, and bready with a blast of tart sting. Well done.

75cl bottle from Appellation Wines Comely Bank. Appearance - red brown with a thin but attractive head. Nose - total flemish red here. Sour but with wood tannins. Tart cherry fruit. Taste - tart fruit, sour notes, wood at the back. The bubbles clear the palate perfectly. Palate - close to medium bodied with a tangy texture and a long dry Overall - a great beer by the Flemish Red wine experts.

75cl bottle @ Shrewsbury Beer Share, Sep 15, courtesy of my good self. Pours a pinkish rosy brown with foamy off-white head. Aroma is sweet, sugary raspberries. Taste is mildly sour with balsamic Duchesse and dark vinous notes and delicate berry fruit, although a bit too light on the fruit side. Some more cherries would’ve been nice.

750ml brown corked and caged bottle with a small booklet, poured into a Rodenbach branded Tulip glass. Appearance is clear ruby red with a small tan head that dissipated quickly leaving no lacing. Aroma of canned sweet cherries, raspberries, vinegar and redcurrant jelly. Flavours of raspberries, cherries, green apples, ripe redcurrants, oak wood notes, vanilla and a hint of chocolate and vinegar. Taste is medium sweet and medium-light sour. Palate is medium bodied, smooth texture and average carbonation. Rodenbach Caractère Rouge is a great sour red ale with mellow vinous flavours. I would have liked it slightly sourer and less sweet.

Keg at Ushers. Pours deep red. Nose is tart raspberries, oak, vinous aromas, cherries, tart berries. Tastes gentle but very sour, tart berries, raspberries, cherries, oak, vinous notes. Its not only sour but also very sweet. Maybe the oak and vinous notes making it more complex. Delicious.

Shared bottle at Mi2 at Cardinal 14.09.15. Dark orange. Diminishing beiige head. Absolutely sublime and complex aroma of aged cherries and other berries. Similarly complex taste. Refreshing, with superb drinkability and complexity.
