4.7 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Bottle shared with Timfoolery and DgdrBlu. Pour a dark brown with little to no head. Tasted of Dark chocolate molasses and all that good stuff. This was my kind of beer and it lived up to the hype.

1.3 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 4/20
Vintage 2011 - yellow wax
A: Pours dark mahogany brown. Little mocha head falls quickly leaving a simple, oily surface. Excellent clarity, actually surprisingly thin appearing with light passing through a full pour, a bit disappointing. No lacing. Surprised there was no head given the description on the bottle bragging about the head quality/quantity. Really a pathetic showing.
S: Green apples, bacon (WTF), caramel, wood, vanilla, anise, licorice. Dark molasses and sweet malts. This smells really interesting and actually keeps me intrigued as the beer warms. On second thought, just smells like sugar, apples and a hint of bacon.
T: Sweet, cloyingly so, with burnt sugar. Caramels. Sweet malts. Smallest hint of alcohol - which makes it fairly well hidden given the ABV. Toasted rye crisps with honey. Overly sweet, like it just didnít finish fermenting - not good.
M: Much thinner than anticipated or adverted on the side of the bottle. Low to no carb. Slick and coated finishing feeling. Resonating.
O: Really a shitty beer. This is the first time Iíve had DL, and thereís been discussion about it being: a) not as good as previous years; b) really much better after it has a year or two on it. I can say this for the beer, it carries a high degree of baggage, and it is difficult for me to be satisfied with a beer that carries sooo much clout and then deviates from itís own description of the beer. I likely wonít seek particularly aggressively next year; especially given the exclusive nature of the beer, and how shitty it is fresh.

4.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
2013 Orange wax. Very dark brown colour, almost black with a beige head that quickly diminishes. Aroma has notes of toasty and roasted malts, caramel, toffee and slightly coffee. Flavor is incredible sweet with notes of sweet wine, slightly wood and toasted malts, some molasses and plumbs are present, also anise and dark berries. The final is sweet, almost cloying, with a good toasted mouthfeel on palate, creamy and dense.

4.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Black wax bottle (2008), generously shared by Bruce. So weíre all standing around the table, sharing beers and salivating over smoked ribs that havenít yet made it to the table, and he pulls this out and is like, "oh hey, anybody want this? Wonder if itís any good." I picked a hell of a night to be the driver. A few small ounces will have to do. Thick, black, viscous, no head by nice legs. Pretty light on the "old beer" flavor. Chew; rich; sexy; chocolate; awesome. Sweet, but not at all cloying. I love how the first taste enters my mouth and is all like "Iím a sweet old rich stout, no biggie," and Iím ready to tick it right there cause thatís how I roll (not really - well, kinda), but then it just sort of hangs around in there, and the flavor seems to resonate and build into something bigger. Maybe thatís just how it seems because Iím savoring the few small ounces I have (so as to ensure Iíll stay sober enough to be a responsible driver and parent and all). Anyway, pretty cool beer and an awesome, unexpected treat.

4.4 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
2103 bottle to large tulip at Craft Heads, Tokyo
I was amazed to see this on their menu...I didnít get it the first night, but eagerly anticipated the return trip. Let the adventure begin. It was served way to cold, so I had to sit here 15 minutes warming it with my hands savouring the aroma wafting over. I may be biased already.
Aroma of dark candied fruits, raspberry, loads of caramel, honey, molasses, oak, chocolate, soy, and maybe a touch of cherry. Pours a deep black with a thin creamy tan head. Starts off really sweet, winch fades somewhat when the chocolate taste begins to build, and then molasses comes on and finally ending with a light bitterness. Throughout, thereís a nice oak and toasted malt flavour as well. Itís full bodied, very smooth and creamy, with an alcohol warmness.
Itís everything, I expected, my only complaint is that this May be a tad too sweet, but otherwise...a awesome.
