2008 Black Wax version...bottled courtesy of a trade with sersdf...saved this one for my 100th rating...poured a thick motor oil like black with a brown head...aroma is dominated by chocolate, malts, wood/oak, as well as coffee...flavor was a mix of chocolate, dark fuits, and malts...by far one of the best, if not the best beers I have ever had...feel lucky that I was able to obtain one so easily since the whole Dark Lord Day thing has turned into a lottery.

Tried a 2011 and a 2012. Quite similar, not much seemed to have changed in that year. Both delicious. Dark, thick, very roasty aroma. Taste is strong, boozy, a little spicy. Coffee is there but not overt, at least at this age.

22 oz bottles of the following vintages: 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2009. These are notes from the mind-blowing Dark Lord Vertical tasting hosted by Huhzubendah on January 23, 2010. This vertical was only a small part of a much larger tasting that went late into the night. A huge thanks to Matt for setting this up this overwhelming event! Pours a pitch black with a dark brown foamy, sticky, lasting head. Aroma is full: roasted malts dominate, with coffee, chocolate, and a general sweetness. Flavor is unbelievable: smooth with more chocolate complexity and bitterness. The ’09 batch has more coffee flavors up front. The ’04 was thick and chewy and amazingly smooth. Alcohol flavors virtually non-existent in the ’04,’05,’06 batches. ’07 and ’08 had a slightly thinner feel and taste than the other batches. Finish is long and complex, with a continually developing taste. The sweetness was done very well, and more subdued in the earlier vintages. Mouthfeel is mouth-coating and seeps into your palate - chewy and delicious. ’09 was the most carbonated, as it was the most recent, and was bolder than earlier vintages. Always an event to have this world class beer. From notes 1/23/10 (Geist Dark Lord vertical tasting)

Thick rich dark brown black with minimal grey-brown lacing. No carbonation, viscous, unctuous, chocolate, coffee, touch of vanilla, tonnes of treacle, molasses, mouth coating, warming. Gloopy, roasty

Finally! Rating number 500. 2014 blue wax bottle. Thanks Ben (SourNrare)! The pour is a viscous oily black with a finger of dark khaki, maybe brown, head. There is not any lace present. The aroma is really good and complex. The molasses is really up front with a strong roast and malt presence. There is just a hint of coffee, as well as an extremely light booziness, but overall, it is just great! The flavor is pretty sweet, but very good. There is a nice caramel or toffee sweetness and a great roastiness. I am not picking up on much else, but it is very good and there is just a hint of chocolate on the end. The mouthfeel is perfect. Thick and oily, almost like a syrup, minimal carbonation but it coats extraordinarily well. The mouth feel is light and sweet, almost like a caramel-ish note and lingering. Beautiful. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

2010 bottle thanks to trade with boamr. Pours a thick black with nice ring of tan brown head that leaves little to no lace; impressed there is still carbonation. Aroma is burnt sugar, roasted malt, coffee, chocolate, booze, and honey. Taste goes straight to chocolate with a nice molasses and bitter coffee back end. Amazing how well this has held up, would love to try it fresh to compare.

Bottle from 2010, oily brown-black, aromas of tobacco, leather, gravy. Palate has earth, toffee, gravy, old leather. Touches of molasses, date and sultana. Dry and dusty texture yet syrupy too.

2009 white wax bottle. shared with 2 other friend. poured viscous dark black with a never lasting caramel head. long alcohol lacing on the side of the glass. dark roasted malts, caramel, pot, cherries, some dark chocolate, dark fruits, big long lasting sugar palate. soy sauce, big alcohol notice. thick mouthfeel, I don’t get at these high ratings, way to over hyped. it’s a beer you need to try once you get into craft beer. and when you try it it’s a big let down!

UPDATED: JUN 28, 2014 2014 bottle. Poured from bomber into pint glass. Black in color, little brown head. Not overwhelming aroma. Super sweet. Almost syrupy mouth feel. A little booze flavor, as well as malt and coffee. Really thick and heavy, a whole bomber is a lot to drink. Pretty tasty. Side note: awesome label.
