Had this on tap at Humpy’s just before the 2012 GABBF (what an amazing "breakfast" beer!). Colour... as black as the singularity of a black hole, with a thick, dark tan head. Nose... lightly smoky and brimming with dark chocolate, booze, wet earth and charred bacon. Palate... chewy, coating, dry, oaky and ashen with loads of bittersweet chocolate, a heaping helping of booze and a deep, dark broodingly tannic feel with anise and black strap molasses at the back of the palate. This is one of MSBC’s finest pieces of zymurgistic art!

Bottle... This beer rocks!… Zhukov-black pour with a tiny, creamy, light brown head. The deeply roasted nose is a mélange of charcoal, worn leather and dark chocolate. Full-bodied with a creamy mouthfeel and busy carbonation. The flavor is straight-up rich, bittersweet fudge with a chocolaty finish. Bottle courtesy of 50belair!

22 oz bottle picked up in San Francisco last June shared with drsordr. Pours dark brown to black in color with a medium sized dense khaki head. The aroma and flavor have roasted malt, dark chocolate, meaty smoke, dark fruits and a hint of spicy rye. Solid offering from these guys, but I’ve had better.

Bottle with Chris, Ray, Jay. Pours black with mocha head and spots of lace. Aroma is bruised, over ripe banana, roasted barley, smoke. Medium to full body with a well concealed abv. Bitter dry finish.

Bottle. Smoke, molasses, cherries, very dry, bready on the palate, no booze, great beer. It’s a little.more dry than I would like but it still a great beer.

Bottled from Decicco. Poured an ultra-viscous deep black motor oil. Slow forming dark tan head. Deep roasted malt and dark chocolate aroma. Rye notes, a bit of bourbon & vanilla as well. Chewy and delicious.

Backlogged rating: Bottle share, Poured near opaque, small head, good oily legs. Heavy roast, chocolate, walnuts, espresso, leather, tobacco, blackened rye and dark fruit overtones. Lush sweetness countered by husky rye, bitter coffee and resiny hops. Very drinkable and ashy slightly boozy finish. I liked this, would love to have a bottle of my own.

Bottle. A: Poured so thick, it was almost like it didn’t want come out of the bottle. Big mocha head that dies away. Leggy bastard. N: Rye, cocoa, alcohol, metallic nature. Coffee, roast. Big, big, rye bread nature. T: Spice from the rye. Malt sweetness that’s cloying. M: Thick and oily. One of the best bodies I’ve had in an RIS which is unfortunate given the rest of its features. O: Decent. I apparently have far too high of a standard, but I wouldn’t have this one again. It’s extremely sweet and unbalanced.

Beautiful black color with brown head. It has a mild aroma but big yet smooth flavor. Leaves lingering coffee notes. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

A vigorous pour into my teku glass produces a fat, dense, three-finger thick, darkly browned head; the head leaves spotty lacing on the sides of the glass as it slowly subsides. The beer is simply opaque and black. The aroma smells rich, concentrated and burnt; roasted molasses, coffee liquor, charred wood, burnt whole grain toast, sweet brown sugar notes, burnt marshmallows, roasted raisin notes, and burnt prunes.

The beer is bitter and roasted up front, but not nearly as sweet as I was expecting, though it still has lots of sweetness. The beer has a lingering bitterness in the finish, a lot of which is from a lingering burnt grain character; the bitterness is actually fairly light for the balance of this beer. Lingering roasted prune notes adds a fruity edge, and there is a bit of blackened raisin as well. There is some spicy, perhaps slightly earthy, maybe even herbal character here, as well as a whole grain, toasted straw like character to the finish. Dark, rich coffee liquor (though not overly sweet), concentrated dark chocolate, and richly burnt molasses / brown sugar notes add a decadent character to this beer without being cloying.

A tasty beer, but doesn’t really set itself apart from many another Imperial Stout; still this isnicely balancedand I like that it is not overly bitter, and the roast character nicely balances and is balanced by the dark malt sweetness.
