COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This Brown stout is similar to a beer first brewed by Barclay Perkins in 1832 and known as Imperial Brown stout, presumably as one of its export destinations was the Russian Imperial Court. The Beer was originally brewed at Thrales Anchor brewery. Hester Thrale ran the brewery with her husband until his death in 1781. As there was no male heir she was forced to sell up.

2.5 year old, in keg from Hanging Bat, Edinburgh. Pours a perfect black, with small deep brown head. Aroma is brilliant imperial stout - deep chocolate, coffee, spice, hint of orange zest. Taste is brilliant too: soft, deep chocolate, a bit of coffee bitterness, milk, a little sultana, brine and a little toffee. Medium-full body, prickle of carbonation, long coffee bitter linger. Tastes like a classic, not modern imperial stout, and a bloody good one at that.

2.5 year old at the Hanging Bat from keg on opening night. Deep tan head that is big to start and leaves multiple laciced rings with every sip. Penetrating nose. Dark fruits, tannic on the tongue. Chewy, booze, tombacco and a burnt earth at the end. Long long aftertaste. Well executed and special

Bottle. Black with a nice tan head. An amazing, thick beer. Lots of roasty character. Raisiny sweetness. Molasses. Alcohol sweetness. Very good.

Bottle. Pours black, frankly brown head. Deep, roasty, salty aromas, with plenty of chocolate, coffee, spice and a touch raisin, plum and dairy. Very smoky, tobacco-like, chocolate flavours. Plenty of pleasant woodiness there as well. Lovely smooth mouthfeel. My kind of beer this.

UPDATED: NOV 22, 2012 Thick black pour, massive brown head that slowly fades to a tin cap. Massive nose of roast malts, oatmeal, some saltiness and big molasses. Dark fruits also. Roast chocolate front, slightly tobacco smoke, more dark chocolate, roast malts, warm but smooth alcohol on the finish. Just as brilliant as I suspected it might be.

[330ml bottle, Cornelius Beer&Wine, Edinburgh] Pours black with a very thin tan head. Oats, alcohol, molasses and chocolate on the nose. Really nice - albeit a tad hot with the alcohol. Flavour is nice and meaty, plenty of thick roasted malt, a touch of coffee before the alcohol comes on at the end. Being super-critical, maybe the balance isn’t quite there on the aftertaste - but it’s a great beer, really enjoyable. Another winner from Stuart [06022012]

From a bottle. Black with brown head, shrinks to a ring. Nice big aroma, chocolate, coffee, licorice and ovaltine. Similar taste, huge flavour, very tasty, well balanced. Big on the palate, thick, finishes nicely. Enjoyed
