4.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 19/20
Really good. Strong malt and sweet aroma. Pitch black with no head but really nice lacing. Oily palate with low carbonation. Strong roasted malt flavor with caramel and some chocolate hints. High alcohol that is somewhat hidden but not completely disguised at this level. Great for the end of a cold day.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Bottle shared with Bruce in his backyard. Pours very dark brown to black with a slight light mocha head. Lots of roast and some chocolate on the nose. Flavor follows with more chocolate and some bitterness. Surprisingly more light bodied than I had expected. Finishes dry and clean. Really nice.

4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
Aroma is big time bourbon, oak, vanilla and a bit of sweetness for balance. Pours out a bit thin but midnight black with a light brown head that is bigger than I would have expected. Tastes slightly boozy with traces of the oak and vanilla from the aroma. More bourbon heat in the aftertaste but not overwhelming for the ABV. Palate is absolutely spot on. Much silkier mouthfeel than it looked like. This is a must try for anyone who likes mammoth Imperial Stouts. Full of bourbon, full of oak.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pitch black color. A bit too rough, dark chocolate with a fair amount of oak. Sweet malty mouth with lots of tooties rolls. Very sweet. Still a bit too rough to rate properly. I would like to revisit in a year or two.

4.6 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
If this isnít the smoothest beer Iíve tried at nearly 17% ABV, then I donít know what is. Nearly flawless in almost every way possible. The only think I can think of offputting would be the sweetness. Definitely the top of its class among high ABV beers. Vanilla, roast, bourbon (not too heavy), chocolate, caramel all play a part. A malt forward beer to be sure. The palate is smooth, almost like a milkshake. A meal in itself. But this and the old Hog Heaven are my favorites, with Maharaja close behind. Hit or miss brewery, but this one is a hit.

4.6 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Bottle, 2014 vintage. Wonderful aroma of rich dark chocolate, roasted malt, bourbon, vanilla and wood. Pours deep black colored with a thin light brown head with good retention and some lacing. Starts with rich roasted malt and chocolate flavors with a thick, oily mouthfeel. Finishes delightfully smooth with excellent notes of bourbon and vanilla joining the other flavors and complementing them nicely with the rich chocolate clinging to the palate making the beer last longer. Absolutely wonderful brew with all of the flavors balancing each other nicely to make a truly elite stout.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Big roasted aroma with lots of oak notes. Pours an opaque black with a large tan head. The bourbon heat is definitely there, but after that subsides thereís a thick coating roasted beer, with vanilla and oak notes. Very full thick mouthfeel, with more heat in the finish. This is a nice sipping beer that should get much better as the heat in it dies.

On tap at Avery. Awesome beer. Canít even tell this beer is 16% ABV. Smooth bourbon flavors meld well with the chocolate malt flavor of the beer. Had to buy a bottle to take home.

2.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 10/20
Bottle (Batch 4, Feb 2015 bottling).
Head is initially small, frothy, brown, mostly lasting.
Body is opaque black (flashlight tested).
Aroma is moderately malty (chocolate syrup, roasted grain, caramel), with notes of raw wood, vanilla, alcohol, whiskey/bourbon.
Flavor is harshly sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter.
Finish is moderately to heavily sweet, lightly acidic, lightly to moderately bitter.
Full body, syrupy texture, soft/lively carbonation, harshly alcoholic.
I can name that tune in...3 notes; sugar, alcohol, and raw wood. I hate to be flippant, but thatís what this beer is about. Yeah, thereís some of the usual choco-vanilla-roast in here too, which virtually all stouts offer, and ample bourbon scent as well (although milder than expected)...but the main feature here is really the unbelievable syrupy sweetness and the painfully burning finish. So harsh on both counts it literally makes my eyes water to take a sip, and very nearly a gag reflex occurs. It doesnít smell bad, mind you, itís just very simple. And I did spend a lot of time with the nose, despite instantly disliking the drinking experience...I kept hoping it would unfold new aromatic treasures as it warmed, but it never did. But letís be honest...like The Bruery, Avery LOVES sugar and alcohol. Thatís pretty much what defines the brewery anymore, if you were to peg them on one particular trait. They almost seem to try to get as much residual sugar as is physically possible in all their big brews, and this is surely one of their crown achievements in that regard...it is almost exactly like taking a big spoonful of granulated cane sugar and putting it in your mouth, no exaggeration; it really is that sweet. And hardly anything to balance other than the massive throat burn. Pretty much undrinkable. But hey...first pour opacity and a lasting head...every cloud has a silver lining!
