COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Jacob Spears, our 6th Great Grand Uncle, is credited as the first distiller to label his whiskey "Bourbon." He built his distillery in Bourbon County, Kentucky in 1790 - 203 years before began brewing. While obviously a bit too late to produce Uncle Jacobís wash, weíve instead created something far more complex. In his honor, we present this robust, silky smooth, full-bodied and altogether extremely American rendition of an Imperial Stout aged for 6 months in the very finest bourbon barrels. This explains a lot about our penchant for big brews! Itís in our blood!
Brewed with Rocky Mountain Water, Malter Barley, Flaked Oats, Hops and Yeast.

Really good. Strong malt and sweet aroma. Pitch black with no head but really nice lacing. Oily palate with low carbonation. Strong roasted malt flavor with caramel and some chocolate hints. High alcohol that is somewhat hidden but not completely disguised at this level. Great for the end of a cold day.

12oz bottle pour a thick black color with a bit of head. Batch 5, Feb 2016. Bitter chocolate, lots of good, and a little overly sweet.

Growler from Stogies íN Hops, served in a tulip glass. Pours heavily viscous, dark inky brownish black with medium dark tan head that laces heavily. Aroma is charred dark chocolate malt, bourbon, licorice, soy sauce, toasted oak. Taste is similar - incredibly thick, rich mouthfeel. Layers of amazing rich flavors - roasted oak barrels, whiskey, vanilla, toasted caramel, espresso beans, umami, molasses, dark chocolate. Boozy, though not excessively so - no way Iíd guess the actual abv here. Lingers roasty and bitter chocolate on the finish. Amazing imperial stout, though Iíd rank this just shy of the best out there like BCBS or Hunapu.

Very warming right off the bat as if it were brewed with oats, full bodied. Heavy more than warming at times. Big maple syrup stout with coffee and alcohol fire at the finish. Like taking a shot at the end. Party time! Should be shared at the end of the night, but maybe not after a ton of drinks cause itís quite fortified itself.

UPDATED: SEP 11, 2016 Many thanks for sharing, Chris! Deep dark brown colour some beige lacing; aroma of extremely intensive alcohol, Bourbon barrel, some coffee and maybe herbal notes; taste is the same with very intensive alcohol.

0.355l bottle, thanks to Cristobal37. Black body, thin light brown head. Aroma of caramel, chocolate, whiskey, pepper and sour cherry. Taste of chocolate, sour cherry, caramel, toast, wood and some smoke. Strong for sure, but not that strong what you would expect from a 17 abv beer.

4600th review! 12 ounce bottle into snifter, bottled on 2/19/2016. Pours dense pitch black color with a 1-2 finger dense dark tan head with incredible retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Dense soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Insane appearance. Aromas of huge dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, fudge brownie, molasses, bourbon, vanilla, coconut, toasted oak, and dark bread; with lighter notes of raisin, prune, date, licorice, tobacco, soy sauce, smoke, char, and roast/oak earthiness. Incredible aromas with awesome complexity and balance of dark/roast/bready malt and bourbon barrel notes; with great strength. Taste of huge dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, fudge brownie, molasses, bourbon, vanilla, coconut, toasted oak, and dark bread; with lighter notes of raisin, prune, date, licorice, tobacco, soy sauce, smoke, char, and roast/oak earthiness. Moderate roast/char bitterness and bourbon/oak spiciness on the finish; with lingering notes of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, fudge brownie, molasses, bourbon, vanilla, coconut, toasted oak, dark bread dark fruit, licorice, smoke, char, and roast/oak earthiness on the finish for a while. Incredible complexity, robustness, and balance dark/roast/bready malt and bourbon barrel flavors; with a great roasted bitter/sweet and bourbon/oak spiciness balance; with zero cloying or astringent flavors after the finish. Light-moderate dryness from roast bitterness and bourbon/oak spice, increasing through the glass. Medium carbonation and very full bodied; with a smooth, creamy/silky/slick, and sticky/chalky balanced mouthfeel that is awesome. Alcohol is well hidden; warming finish with and some light booziness lingering. Overall this is an insane barrel aged imperial stout! All around incredible complexity, robustness, and balance dark/roast/bready malt and bourbon barrel flavors; very smooth to sip on slowly for the huge ABV. Enormous amounts of barrel character, but plenty of malt to back it up; without being too dry or boozy on the barrel notes. An insanely amazing offering.

Review is of bottle dated 2/4/14 Pours a pitch black body with a 1/5th of an inch chocolate head. Head retention and lacing were average for a 15 percent beer. Smell is big on alcohol, not so much bourbon, but slightly like rubbing alcohol. Chocolate covered brownie, charred oak, and port wine are also present. No hops, tons of sweetness dominate. Taste is a mix of port wine, imperial stout, chocolate syrup and straight whisky. Sweet oak counteracts the maltiness of beer, alcohol is definitely there but not too bad for 15 percent. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, slightly chewy. Highly carbonated for such a high gravity beer. Wish head stayed around but its not uncommon in this type of beer. Overall this was a good dessert/sipping drink. Similar to dark lord in terms of sweetness, but with some whisky flavor. Aging helped mellow it some, 12oz was definitely enough, borderline too sweet.

2016/08/24 - Pours pitch black with a foamy, tan head that quickly dissipates and leaves ample lacing. Aroma is barrel, heavy cocoa and espresso, vanilla, leather, sweet roasted malt, licorice and hints of dark fruits and alcohol. Taste follows nose; lots of roasted espresso and cocoa, bourbon-vanilla notes, barrel, licorice, raisin and heavy booze. Mouthfeel is full and sticky with smooth carbonation and a long, warming, boozy finish. Sweet without being cloying and complex without being convoluted. Alcohol begins hidden, but quickly becomes more evident (and slightly harsh) as the beer warms. All things considered, this beer does a pretty good job masking the 17.1% ABV. A great sipper. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Shared a vertical of the 2013, 2014, 2015. This beer is ultra black and viscous. A brown head forms then quickly disappears. The aroma is boozy in character but without much burn. Notes of cacao, espresso, molasses, rum, bourbon, vanilla, and more are all over the place. The body is massive and creamy. A single drop of this beer is rich and full. Sweet notes of spirits make up the flavor. More bourbon, chocolate, espresso and dark fruits are everywhere. For as crazy big of a beer this is, itís not offensive or hot. It was remarkable how similar the vintages were. Even the 2013 had plenty of sharpness and roast to it, but the finish was slightly more well rounded.
