Cask at the Southampton Arms, Kentish Town - 20/04/12. Dark brown with a light tan head. Dark malt, wood bark, licquorice on the nose. Taste develops in a similar way with a little smoke. Light to medium bodied.

Cask-conditioned at the Cask, Pub and Kitchen 16/04/2012. Ruddy brown with a slight, off-white head. Lightly fruity aroma with a touch of wood. Flavour had some more fruit, a vinous edge and slightly dry finish. Fine.

CP&K. Clear dark red - brown beer. Short pale tan head. Light dry palate. Mild mild dark malt. A little wood, soft and dry. Whisper of vanilla. Red wine is a subtle presence on the back of the tongue. Tangy dry finish. interesting - not had a barrel aged mild before. Very understated which was perhaps the point. An enjoyable beer but I would normally prefer everything a little bolder.

Aroma dominated by red wine and oak, no real ale in there. Body is really light, rather dry, and leaves a cloying slick layer that isnít at all pleasant. The flavour is quite nice, if nothing too special, nuts, dry red wine, wood, butter. Itís just there... Not unpleasant, not wonderful.

Cask. Pours dark tan, almost black. Light tan head. Licorice smells with nice warm malt scents. In the mouth, there licorice woody roots, a dry smoky feel. Thereís also walnuts and a weak powdered chocolate. Thereís a vinous, slightly fruity (Iím guessing from the casks). Finished up with the dry smokiness and itís slightly chalky.
