When Central Waters decided to open its brew house for its first collaboration beer, Chicago’s Local Option was the obvious partner in crime. The resulting brainchild, Bourbon Barrel Aged La Petite Mort – a Belgian inspired Weissenbock – maintains the traditional characteristics of its Bavarian forbearer, with the added complexity of Belgian ale yeast. BBA La Petite Mort is dark amber in color; maintains a rich, full-bodied mouth-feel augmented by caramel; mild and dark fruit; and vanilla and bourbon aromas as a result of six months of aging on Heaven Hill Barrels.. Rounded out by an unostentatious bourbon driven aroma from brief bourbon barrel aging, BBA La Petite Mort is a complex ale, a marriage of distinctive styles, and an orgasmic experience for the taste buds that revel in its glory.

(draft @ Local Option - Chicago, IL) Cloudy brown with a tan head. Sweet wheat and malt aroma with a nice vanilla hint of the barrel aging. Tangy wheat beginning with a good amount of spice but then tons of vanilla and oak hints.

Tap: Deepest brown body with a sliver of khaki film traced across the top. Aroma starts with some moderate barrel induced vanilla & woody coconut with a huge rear end of wet, boozy oak. Lots of bourbon, caramel, & a pretty heavy syrupy sweetness throughout. Flavor is also pretty boozy. Very bourbon forward, getting near outright "hot" territory. Notes of cocoa dust, dark fruits, hints of vanilla, & slabs of charred oak. Light inductions of toasted caramel malts. Strong bourbon & wood finish that lingers. Pretty nice flavors but the booziness could be toned down just a bit.

Dark hazy brown pour with light tan head. Aroma is sweet caramel and brown sugar. Taste is nose but sweeter and a little astringent.

One of the better Central Waters beers I’ve had, though maybe I should look into this local option a bit more. Dark brown with some thick tan head. Big bourbon aroma, some vanilla, brown sugar and thick apricot aftertaste.

This is a good barreled beer, though 0% of the supposed weissenbock inspired base comes through. Lots of vanilla and booze. Smooth palate. Reminds me of a lighter and less complex Stickee Monkee.

On tap @ Farmhouse. Hazy medium brown, very little head formation. Intense bourbon nose and palate-- the bourbon eclipses all else, obliterating the underlying weizenbock. If you love a bourbon bomb then this is your beer. Waaayyy too much bourbon for my taste preference though.

Got extra’d this recently in a big trade. Hooray! Large format bottle with no date. Pours dark brown and settles without letting much of any light through in the glass, with a khaki one finger head. Definite aroma of bourbon, huge oak presence, some spice, not much else here. Pretty bourbon forward nose. Flavor is big bourbon notes, a bit harsh, a little vanilla, settles with a little bit of spice and then a long caramel vanilla finish with lots of woodyness. Somewhat thin on the body, medium carbonation. Yikes. These sorts of beers just don’t handle the barrel well for me, and end up tasting very harsh without any of the sweet, pleasant nuance of the bourbon itself. Not getting into this one.

Bomber from Whole Paycheck. Pours a dark brown reddish color with a medium light brown head. A big barrel nose, vanilla, oak, rum cake. The flavor is rich bourbon, vanilla, heat, oak, some banana, malty rich base, more fruity sweet bananas and toffee, a bit of berries. Works really well.
