COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Calling Double Trouble a "hop showcase" might imply that this brutal 167 IBU monster has your best interests at heart. If your answer to the question, "How much hopping would you like?" is simply "more", this is what you wish for. The malt base and Chico yeast together construct the perfect platform for the multiple additions of so many hop varieties no mere beer label could label them all. Your overwhelmed taste buds will know the feeling.

Tuatara need to be commended for this beer as it is one of the best I have tried. While aggressively hoppy at 167 IBU (which I would contest) it has a smooth sweetness that carries the beer. A little alcoholic on the finish, but I am nitpicking on a fine specimen of a beer. Extra points given for 3D glasses that accompany the beer.

Aroma is grapefruit, passionfruit, citrus, lemon grass and light sweet malts. Taste is light malts, met fairly quickly with bitter clove and tanin. bitterness isnt excessive and finishes surprisingly smooth. Appearance is a clear gold with a pearl head that retains fairly well.

An amazing creation from Tuatara right here. A very easy to drink and beautifully balanced IPA which hides its high alcohol content dangerously well. The malt and hop profile sing a sweet harmony together. Flavours of peach and apricot are lifted by subtle citrus/pineapple notes that lead to a thoroughly exotic and refreshing experience. A modern day classic.

Out the bottle and into a chalice, at just on cool. Oh, it looks damn good. Fluffy and silky looking inch of white atop a sparkling, vibrant, orange amber body. Head holds fast and weaves a drabby, thick lace. Piney, deep, resinous, fruity hop nose; jammy, plummy with a lot of stonefruit and sticky conserve notes. Quite full, rounded, all-encompassing on the palate. Nicely low in carbonation to see it dwell on the tongue letting all the flavour and aroma permeate into every nook and cranny. Stonefruit dominates here too. Not overly sweet; quite ripe and fruity with a tangy mid-palate and a bitter, all hop swallow. Good length; again like peach, apricot and plums with plenty of grapefruit to fill it out. Biscuity malt underneath with a grainy, granola edge; balances in well. Alcohol has warmth but under the weight of the fruit and malt ties in really nicely. This is delicious. Not farfetched or over-the-top, just a great IIPA. Another gem from this brewer!!! This beer is crazy, it’s like two drinks in one. the initial taste versus what rests on your palate a second or two later is black versus white. Amazing job Tuatara, an inspiration to any home brewer who is after something special.

bottle from Super merkato. On opening 30mm bubble sat on rim with lacing rising up around circumference of bubble, like some sort of anti gravity machine. heady stuff! Aroma was more balanced than expected - i was expecting hop assault (perhaps I am gaining immunity?). pine, resin, grass all present. Less of the fruit. Malt, alcohol and hops in a fair fight with none dominating - so there was more malt characteristics than expected - caramel & banana being the most obvious for me. Not as bitter as IBU indicated (167?!). Right up with C!tra (hope I spell correctly) as NZ’s top IIPA in my ’umple opinion.

Pours a clear medium gold with a loose white two finger head diminishing gradually to a thin cap and heavy sticky lacing. Nose is powerfully hoppy - dank, sticky, and resiny, with some floral tones, yet with a noticeable caramel malt base. Taste is grapefruit and pine, but balanced with light sweet malt. Medium body, slippery and sticky, with sustained moderate carbonation and a long, lingering bitter finish. Woof. Nearly eye-watering hops when I cracked the bottle. A definite hop bomb palate wrecker. If this is after age degradation, I hesitate to think what this beast was when fresh. Though, for all that, I don’t find its 167 (!) IBU’s "brutal" as the label claims, but it’s definitely in your face.

Great lemony, grassy nose, some piss, crackers. Sweet and lemony flavor, great hops, oranges, leafy, peaches, a bit of mango. A bit too sweet, and lightly cloying, but good. Great fruits.

Bomber. Rich caramel nose with fat oily fruit. Treacly-sweet initial, goes to good balance, with sweet dates, juicy prunes, and light puckering hops. Medium-heavy body. Nice. A bit too sweet initially, but moves gradualy into distinct fruitiness.

Pours a nice and dark golden with a medium white head that offers great lacing. Aroma is pretty much what you would expect with all the pine and and other hoppy notes but I also get a lot of ethanol and some perfume. Taste is sweet and really well balanced by the heavy bitterness but it is still really, really sweet. Said bitterness is almost harsh but not quite, pretty soft for such a hardcore brew in fact. Flavors are on the sugary side but there is also some fruity components to it. Body is medium, carbonation low and the impression I get is of a lightly syrupy brew. Well made but I’m not sure if I would ever seek out again.

bottle shared by mathieuc, thanks bro. pours unclear light but bright golden with a small off-white cap, good retention and lacing. melons, pine, grapefruit, danky berries, sweetish toasted malts, caramel touch, exotic juice - passionfruit-like, bit of booze. moderate carbonation, light to medium body - oily and a bit sticky, assertive and balanced grassy-spicy-piney-citrusy finish. good stuff!
