UPDATED: JAN 28, 2013 Too similar to Black Tuesday to warrant a different review. Hazelnuts are faint at best. Pretty hot as well. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Jet black appearance. The wax from the bottle smells amazing..tempted to chew it like the wax candy from the 70s. Big bold imperial stout flavor with a nice bourbon coating on my tongue, with the hazelnuts on the back end. A bit hot (hey dummy, its 18.5%), but hidden well for the percentage.

Dark brown pour. Nose is hazelnuts, booze, chocolate. Taste is hazelnuts and huge booze, incredibly sweet. Syrupy mefium mouthfeel.

Pour out of 750 mL bottle, thick black pour with thin to no brown head, aroma is nutella-like, with big sweet hazelnut, chestnut, cocoa powder, lots of vanilla, bourbon, hints of oak, slight coffee and dark fruit as well. Taste is a mix of sweet vanilla, caramel, molasses, dark fruit, nutty notes into bourbon, slight booze but really not bad for the ABV, finishing very sweet. It’s a bit much, but I dig it.

UPDATED: JUL 5, 2014 Bottle from bruery.com pours black with not much of a brown head. Big aroma of hazelnut. Tastes very boozy. Some roasted malts and hazelnut in finish

Bottle from The Bruery. Pours near black with almost no head and a massive alcohol aroma. There is a fruity treacle flavor with a hint of hazelnut and a very warm alcohol trail. Burns the palate, but a very nice sipper.

Bottle pours viscous black with thin tan head. Aroma chocolate, bourbon, spices, roast, sweet malts. Taste mostly follows aroma, also some hazelnuts and sweet notes that reminded me of rum. Boozy finish with persistent hazelnuts. Thick full palate.

As you’d expect this tastes a lot like Black Tuesday. I am not a big hazelnut fan but it works well here. The degree of hazelnut flavor is just right and enhances rather than overwhelms. As I noted there is also a sweetish rum-like flavor that comes in at times - I’m not sure how the addition of hazelnuts caused that but it tastes pretty good.

Black pour, moderate to small head, minimal lacing and retention. Aroma is big with notes of nut, bourbon barrel, vanilla, chocolate, darker fruit, roast, alcohol. Full bodied, alcoholic, sweet, and choconutty. Decadent but doesn’t have the endless layers of complexity that some other big imperials have.

Got to try a small sample of this at the Swamp Head Bottle Drop bottle share. Pours dark brown, murky, almost like a BA Old Ale or Barleywine, but maybe a bit darker. Nearly no head, what is there is a yellowish khaki color that is just a ring around the top of the glass. Aroma of big caramel notes, pralines, hazelnuts, booze, huge vanilla, maybe some coocnunt. Flavor follows the aroma perfectly with massive nutty caramel vanilla notes, some light marshmallow, bourbon galore, booze, sweet brown sugar. Wow. This blows away BT and CR for me. Really drinks more like a BA Barleywine or BA Scotch Ale than a stout. Mouthfeel is big, thick, boozy, and warming with low carbonation. Just a really beautiful beer and thus far easily my favorite variant of the BT brew.

From the tap at Sucréversary. Dark and oily with a firm head. Really sweet molasses and brown sugar flavors with an oily mouthfeel. Aroma was caramel, cocoa, and nuts. Finish was sugary and cloying. Hard to tell the alcohol content though.
