4.6 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 19/20
Black pour with a frothy tan head. Beautiful aroma of anise liqueur, mocha, candied plum, earthy hops, and dark chocolate. Hard to describe the flavor any better than Avery did in the description, but it follows the aroma well with milk chocolate upfornt, anise and some spicy/perfume like hops mid-palate, giving way to candied dark fruit and slight mint pepper and basil. Full bodied and slightly hot. Finishes like a cream liqueur with a dash of aged whiskey.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
22 oz. bomber from La Vista Liquor. 2011 batch, 10.57% abv. Pours jet black with little head. Aroma of chocolate, dark cherries, anise, caramel malt, roasted barley, and booze. Taste is well balanced, the soft caramel sweetness is offset by the roastiness and light hop bitterness. Easy to drink and smooth for such a high abv. Full bodied, oily texture, soft carbonation, long, sweet finish. I’m starting to like Avery beers better overall the more I try them, I think Hog Heaven turned me off because it was too hoppy but The Czar is smooth and fine.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle from Corvallis Brew Supply, Corvallis. Pours a deep, dark brown, some tan head. Aroma truly bizarre; raisins, candi sugar, cocoa powder, some roasted malts. Body full yet smooth, just a bit of boozy burn in the finish. Different for sure.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Transferred from BA review on 4-10-12 -
Served on tap in a 10 oz chalice glass
Appearance – Served a deep dark brown, nearly black color with a light brown head. The head faded quite fast and gave way to a good amount of lacing.
Smell – The aromas are sweeter in this stout. Dark fruit aromas of cherry , raisin and prune are the heaviest. There are some nice roasted aromas of chocolate and malt mixed in with the nose as well.
Taste – The taste is quite roasted malt up front. Hints of chocolate meet the tongue and very soon mingle with some of the potent dark fruit flavors that were detected in the nose. The sweeter fruit flavors meld quite well with the roasty flavors. The fruit flavors really keep strong, but a nice bitterness starts to work its way into the tongue and balances out some of the sweet quite well. There is a nice semi-sweet, roasty flavor left on the tongue at the end of the taste with a little bit of a warming from a light alcohol flavor.
Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is nice and creamy. The brew coats the tongue and mouth allowing the sweet and more biter flavors to really permeate the tongue. The carbonation level is quite low and really accentuates this feel.
Overall –This is a nice imperial. It has some nice balance between sweet and bitter flavors. While it is a bit pricey, it is well worth a try. Give it a go!!

2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 10/20
Pours a deep brown almost black color with a molasses aroma. Taste is coffee, toffee, and alcohol malt. A lasting linger on the palate that verifies the alcohol content. A candied flavor with this beer, almost like a Belgian Strong. An enjoyable beer but not my favorite Imperial Stout.

4.8 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
Poured from a bomber into a pint glass. Pours a deep black, with a small tan head that quickly fades, leaving good lacing. Nose is toffee and molasses. Taste is caramel, toffee and dark fruit. Delicious. Hides the ABV well. Very drinkable now, would be outstanding if cellared for a year or two.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pours an opaque, extremely dark brown with a fat, creamy, somewhat sudsy, khaki colored head. The nose is sorghum in a glass jug after just lifting off the cap that leaves a bit of rusty residue. Rich, thick mouthfeel. Fruit forward, with a balance of sorghum and zinc providing the structure.
