The top product from the Rochefort Trappist brewery. Dark color, full and very impressive taste. Strong plum, raisin, and black currant palate, with ascending notes of vinousness and other complexities.

A new founded taste for Belgian beers and indeed strong beers lead me on a persuit to find this beast of a beer. I found it on Cask on Liverpool Road in Manchester and when I initially tried it, I’d had a few pints already so felt I couldn’t fully appreciate it, so I went back a week later to try again. From the moment you start pouring this, it is just irresistable, the dark colour with a tan head, the nose of raisins, figs, cherries, sugars, alcohol, its mind blowing. It feels like a very naughty treat, its dangerously good and dangerously strong, you wouldn’t guess its an 11.3% beer until you begin to get up and walk after it. Flavour of raisins, dates, bit of plum, maybe chocolate malt. A lively carbonation keeps up with the flavours, it is a pure delight to drink and at £4.80 a bottle (I’ve seen prices over £6 elsewhere) a total bargain.

Pretty used to Rochefort, although this is a class beer. Cloudy dark-brown colour, fine persistant creamy head with a nice lacing, deeply complex aroma of plums, banana(!!!), nougat, nuts, full-bodied, oily with a strong bitterness, the finish is explosive showing malt, warming alcohol and licorice. Doesn’t age that well like the Westvleteren or Westmalle Dubbel. Wonder why?

The blue cap, the big one in the ’holy’ Rochefort trinity and one of the true greats in the ’massive ale’ style. Mousse-like, nicely lacing, tanned foam, stable in relation to its ABV, though it inevitably turns to ’islands’ of foam after a while, colour of the same hue as the 8 but clearly darker and equally misty; aroma even more powerful and intensely perfumed, I reckon anyone who knows this beer can recognise a bottle being opened from a few meters distance, impressions of banana liqueur, marzipan, chocolate, port wine, coriander, the ever-present Rochefort liquorice effect, peppery hops, freshly grated ginger, Flemish ’boterkoeken’, dates, pear syrup; taste begins with a full and rich fruity sweetness, lots of candi sugar, medium carbonisation, very full, almost syrupy mouthfeel, intense and profound maltiness (caramel and chocolate with a nutty touch), opulently decorated with spices (coriander, cloves, liquorice), yeasty, aftertaste with an increasing degree of alcohol warmth (rum, brandy) but never becoming astringent, peppery hoppiness, candi sweetness also lingers on and I can accept the fact that this may be a bit too cloying for many (but then there is still the 8). Wish I had the patience to keep a few in my cellar for some years as this is one of the few big Belgian ales I have not yet tasted as old beer - and I am pretty sure this will stand the test of time gloriously.

From Brugge, somewhere. Appearance is a deep dark with an off white head. Aroma is of plums, raisins and some dark chocolate. Taste is of dark fruits, a touch of chocolate with a slight bready note at the end. Very smooth and drinkable. There’s a nice bit of spiciness in the finish. Very tasty.

@ Havregatan. Bottle (330 ml) from Systembolaget (40:-). Fruity and sweet malty, raisins and caramel, some nice alcohol notes, very complex, medium body with an oily texture. The finish is sweet and very fruity with alcohol notes.
