The top product from the Rochefort Trappist brewery. Dark color, full and very impressive taste. Strong plum, raisin, and black currant palate, with ascending notes of vinousness and other complexities.

A new founded taste for Belgian beers and indeed strong beers lead me on a persuit to find this beast of a beer. I found it on Cask on Liverpool Road in Manchester and when I initially tried it, I’d had a few pints already so felt I couldn’t fully appreciate it, so I went back a week later to try again. From the moment you start pouring this, it is just irresistable, the dark colour with a tan head, the nose of raisins, figs, cherries, sugars, alcohol, its mind blowing. It feels like a very naughty treat, its dangerously good and dangerously strong, you wouldn’t guess its an 11.3% beer until you begin to get up and walk after it. Flavour of raisins, dates, bit of plum, maybe chocolate malt. A lively carbonation keeps up with the flavours, it is a pure delight to drink and at Ł4.80 a bottle (I’ve seen prices over Ł6 elsewhere) a total bargain.

Looks cola like in the glass with off white thick head that disappeared quickly. Aroma is chocolate covered plums and a little dirt smell similar to a good red wine. Taste is dark fruit. Very balanced with a nice long finish. Very good beer with great carbonation ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

330 ml bottle purchased at Julio’s Liquors. Darker, damn near brown in color thick head retention. Aroma is real nice, light cherry, raisins and a fruit medley. Real nice.

This is a delight to sip. The yeast is pretty bold, tons of fruit with candy sugar and dates. This is a younger bottle and the alcohol is rather evident in the finish giving a good amount of drying on the tongue. The body is fuller with a yeasty chewy texture but somehow has a easy to drink "lightness" perhaps the carbonation level plays here. I have not had a chance to compare vintages yet. But after this sample that will be in order. Pretty awesome quad.

Finisz przyprawowo - owocowy, długi i przyjemny. Doskonałe, choć nieco szorstkie piwo.

11.2 oz, bottle from Cash Wise in Williston. Appearance: finger khaki head, head lasts as a film, good lacing, copper red color, clear. Aroma: light chocolate, raisin. Palate: medium-full body, average carbonation, light alcohol warming, thin texture with a sticky finish. Taste: sweet chocolaty malt into a nice dark fruit, raisin, sweetness, that rides out the taste, with a light alcohol taste coming though in the middle. This is an amazing beer. There is a lot of hype behind it, so I was skeptical, but this is simply amazing. Perfect balance of booze to alcohol for the strength, amazing flavors, simple, but not overly so, not cloying, very drinkable for the percentage. I love this beer.

I bicycled through Belgium in the 1980’s and my fondest beer memories remain from that trip. An absolute beer drinkers heaven! Several Trappistes have remained fresh in my mind over the years, and this is one of them. Popped a bottle this evening for the first time since I left Belgium years ago, and it is certainly one of the world’s best brews. They do one thing, and they do it extremely well indeed!

Pours a cloudy dark brown brew with a big reddish head with good retention, aroma is moderate to heavy sweet with dark fruits, dried fruits, caramel and spices, robust bodied, smooth, well balanced, flavor is moderate to heavy sweet and low bitter with a sweet finish and a long aftertaste, very good.

xtremely powerful alcohol presence almost destroys this unique brew, but other flavors (chocolate for one), as well as the great root beer/fruity/nutty nose and nice muddy color help save it.

"had this for the first time last night with the 6 and 8 as well. this was the consensus king of the belgians. poured a hazy dark brown with hints of dark fruits, figs and a surprisingly understated yeast presence in the nose and flavor...although the flavor was stronger and more assertive than the aroma (in all the Roche beers). Very nice, with a very smooth mouthfeel, which to me was the beers strongest aspect. Full bodied, as well as smooth. Tight carbonation that is not overdone. I was really hoping for a 5 or close to it with this one, and while i liked it more than any other belgian beer i’ve had to date, it fell just short of "blow your socks off status". Glad I’ve got one of each left :)"
