4.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
UPDATED: DEC 22, 2012 33cl bottle. Pours deep chestnut brown with impeccable off-white/tan head, decent lacing. Aroma is wonderfully complex: plums, figs, raisins, grapes, dates, black forest fruits, clove, bread, red wine, yeast complexity. Taste is equally complex and rich: dark fruits play a major part, cloves and spices, berries, vinous notes, slight alcohol, beguiling yeast complexity. Perfect carbonation leads to a wonderfully full silky mouthfeel. Slight alcohol warmth as it goes down, satisfying and lasting multilayered aftertaste. An absolute cracker of a beer, one of the very best out there no doubt.

330 ml bottle. Pours a translucent reddish brown color with a small beige head. Aroma has notes of dark dried fruits and cola. Flavor is sublimely sweet and complex. Lot’s of dried fruits and sweet sherry notes. There is a wonderful, rich, buttery maltiness that is exquisite to sip and savor. It’s somehow so very ethereal and indulgent. The warming alcohol conjures up memories of an old port, single malt scotch or rare bourbon. It’s that good. The finish is sweet and fruity, with hints of juicy plums and Calvados. A beautiful beer.

Bottles from Rehills, Newcastle, Carrefour, Calais, Oddbins Newcastle (now closed). A very dark brown beer with a rich red fruit and floral hoppy flavour, currants, red fruit, sherry and sarsaparilla followed by a sugary sweet, candy sugar and powerfully alcoholic finish. Excellent!

My favourite beer. Living on the south coast of England, I can drive over via Eurotunnel and buy this in Belgium pretty much any time I want. It means I can get it fresh and lay it down for drinking later. But you’ve really got to drink it from the correctly-shaped (chalice) glass; it really does affect the pour, the head, and the taste.

A nice beer but not really my style. Roasty, fruity, complex taste, but too boozy. Could’ve done a better job hiding the alcohol. "But this is 11%!!!" Lots of 11% beers, even simple DIPAs, do a better job of hiding the alcohol than this.

So easy to get, but quite some time since I had one. Years ago I was lyrical about this beer, but I really think it has changed in a not so positive way. (I know my references have changed as well, but still .....).
Dark brown, can be clear, with a creamy beige head. Aroma of roasted malts , some sweetness and this typical herbal yeasty thing from which you can recognize a Rochefort. Not bad, but my first ratings (late 90’s) would give it a much higher score than I will give it now.

The high alcohol percentage shouldn’t scare you, it’s a very easy to drink beer with one of the greatest tastes ever! Dark brown beautiful color and the taste is very complex but extremely nice to drink. The fruits explode in your mouth while you can taste a sufficient bitterness.

Bottle sample at a tasting at Beer & Beyond, Tel Aviv. Hazy brown, low quickly diminishing beige head. Aroma of liqueur, cherry, very alcoholic, fruity, notes of honey, date honey. Heavy cherry flavor, very sweet, malty, yeasty, woody. Lively carbonation. Full body. Sweetish sticky aftertaste. Very nice.

Licorice aroma, cloudy dark brown with a small diminishing head, complex flavours very malty, long lasting flavour, has low carbonation very light to drink - smooth, considering the ABV was not at all overpowering it gives a great warming sensation
