J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy Scotch Ale Scotland's bone-chilling winters command a strong, richly-flavored brew. J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy is such an ale. Named for Brewmaster Skip Virgilio's maternal grandfather, J.P. Gray's is a blend of the prized Maris Otter barley and dark roasted barley which imparts a slightly smoky flavor and a deep chestnut appearance. In the style of a classic Scottish wee heavy, this fine ale is remarkably smooth and malty with background flavors of chocolate and molasses. Warmth is provided by a substantial 9% alcohol by volume. The high alcohol and fresh ingredients allow this ale to age well over time. Appearance: Deep mahogany color, sparkling clarity, and excellent head formation and retention when properly served. Flavor: Deep caramelly malty flavor with just a hint of smoke in the finish. Aroma: The aroma is sweet and voluptuous, reflecting the flavor with malt, hop and yeast characteristics. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Lush, full, rounded, almost chewy. This is a BIG beer!

Big bottle from Hi-Time. Dark amber ruby body with stick head. Nose of raisins and caramel. Taste of malts, caramel and then nice chocolates. Really crisp and full-flavoured. Nice ABV towards the end. Great Scotch flavours. Well done, California.

The Dan Journal #309. Tasted 10/3/09. 750ml bottle. Filtered with a dark maple amber hue. Webbed off-white head. Aromas of raisins and spices. Nutty and doughy. Very nice nose. Full bodied and sweet and spicy. Sticky. Wonderful complexity. Flavors of raisins and port. Vanilla and graham crackers. Mild caramel note. Good bitter finish. Rolling and complex palate. Very well done! Great drinking!

Pours a muddy reddish-brown with thick biege head that displays solid retention. Lacing is also very admirable. Nose is punctuated by a smell of wet barley (like straight from the tun), molasses and as odd this may sound, merlot. Flavor is complex, a melding of brown sugar, smoke, peat and dark cherries. Full bodied with a great mouthfeel. Very drinkable for a double digit abv, heat is almost non-existent. Another alesmith offering that I really enjoyed.

Dark ruby-colored with a small off-white head that leaves lacings that stays around to the end which is quite impressive for a beer of this size. The aroma is of sweet malts, lots of caramel, fruity notes and a gentle touch of alcohol. There’s delicious malts all around in the flavor. Very complex malt profile. Some bready notes, but most of all lots of caramel. With a complementary fruitiness, that has a very gentle tart character (perhaps caused by cellaring), I get a sensation similar to hard fruit candy. The finish as mildly bitter with more notes of malts, a gentle roasted note and some alcohol. The alcohol is nicely hidden and well integrated. Medium body with a slick texture. A well crafted beer. Very impressive malty profile and surprisingly easy to drink. Serving type: bottle (Copy of old Beer Advocate review)

Bottled at Stockholm Beer Festival 2009. Dark brown color. Thick sweet, very raisiny and warming aroma. Sweet, raisiny and toffeish flavor. Nicely warming palate. Good dark fruit character. Very drinkable despite the strength and sweetness,

4th September 2008. Cloudy brown beer. Starts with an even mix of salty malt and smooth chocolate. Finishes with a chocolate and hop mix and some alcohol warmth. Complex and tasty!

Dark brown pour with plenty of tan lacy foam. Sweet, smooth and chocolaty flavor with a dry and bitter aftertaste.
