rampmaster (642) - Alden, USA - MAR 15, 2011
Presentation: It was poured from a brown 11.2oz bottle into a chalice. The bottle has a best before date of 16 04 12. The back label also lists the abv at 8%. Appearance: It has a dark burgundy colored body with a light haze and some yeast floaters. This is capped by a light beige head of frothy light foam. From the pour it left some yeast sediment on top of the head which looks like a dusting of cinnamon. The head hangs on well, slowly fading as I drink and making some nice lacing on the glass. Smell: There are fruity and estery yeast notes of raisins and apple peel with a slight hint of spice and funk. This is all comes with a nice sweet bready maltiness as well. Taste/Palate: Wow, this one has good complexity with fruity and spicy yeast, sweet bready and nutty malts. I get notes of cocoa powder blending with notes of walnuts and hazel nuts like Nutella within the sweet bready maltiness. Fruity notes remind me of raisins and as it warms I get some cherry as well. Hops are light and help to balance with mild bitterness and dryness in the finish. The palate has a solid medium body with mild carbonation. Notes: This beer has wonderful complexity and drinkability.

Now I love me a double. One of the originals. These are great cause you get everything that kicks ass with quad with high drinkability. Nutty and fizzy. Belgian yeasty finish.

Waited until over 6C. Aroma: Dark fruits, Biscuit; Appearance: Dark/drown, solid ; Taste: Slightly Fruity, with a malty sweet finish. Very tasty; Overall like some previous ratings the aroma never alluded to how tasty the beer is. Very enjoyable indeed.

Grapey, pear like aroma. Medium brown body. Taste is sugary pear with a touch of yeast funk. More flavor than you would expect. Towards the end of the sip the flavor bursts with carbonation and dissapates pretty quickly.

The first beer of my St Bernardus evening. I have a mixed four pack of 330ml bottles that I am drinking, reviewing three as I go (I have already reviewed the 12 some time ago). This bottle is best before 15th Feb 2010, today is 1st March 2008. It was poured into my Westmalle bowl glass. Looks wonderful at first, a deep clear redish brown with a full light biege foaming head. The head fell away just a bit to quickly for me, I like it to stay untila at least I’ve had a sip or two. Rich malty molasses fill your nose and a toffee, coffee sweetness comes through too. The taste was a big let down for me, none of the flavours of the smell comes through into the actual beer. It is almost the blandest and tasteless dubbel I can remember having and I have had more than a few over the years. It can’t be discribed as watery, but it isn’t a thick or viscous in any way either. A sourness comes into the mouthfeel as the beer warms in the mouth and I didn’t like that either! All in all a mixed start to my evening of tastings. I was expecting a lot more from this beer.

2012.05.09 - 750ml bottle in pint glass. Pours a mid brownish orange. Very active foamy head recedes slowly, leaves foam around the glass. Taste is pretty much what you'd expect if you've had other St. Bernardus brews. Clear Belgian taste, flavorful but not as strong as the higher abv SB offerings. Much closer to a session beer than other SB offerings.

Nice dark brown color with 2 fingers of foam, very fruit aroma. Hints of lemon and other sour fruit, kind of unexpected. Looks like a heavy beer which it isn’t.

Poured into my St. Bernardus chalice from an 11.2 ounce bottle best before 19-04-14.

A: Beautiful opaque chestnut body with light visible through the edges, dense billowing tan head looks wonderful in the chalice.

S: This is pretty straight forward, a bit earthy and floral with fruity esters, slight biscuit aroma.

T: Wow, the flavor is full here, in a good way. Mildly fruity from start to finish hinting at grapes and apples, while a biscuit flavor lays the ground work. This is an excellent beer.

M: This is a pretty thick beer with mild carbonation.

O: The flavor of this really shocked me coming from the rather weak aroma, I say weak only in comparison to strength. This is one of my favorite dubbels now with a lot of complexity to it.
