Dry grapey aroma. Dark muddy brown body, tannish head. Taste is bright with carbonation then drops to a deep malty finished with a slight sour. Very well balanced and complex. The flavor builds after the sip, oddly similar to a scotch. Quite interesting.

33 cl. bottle @ home. Hazy brown with a huge tan head. Aroma of roasted malts and dark fruits. Taste is sweet but certainly not too sweet. really balanced beer, maybe even better than the Abt.
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 tombyars (1102) - Saltcoats, SCOTLAND - MAY 18, 2012
Tasted this in a forgotten hostelry somewhere in Brussels in April 2012. 33cl bottle. Pours a muddy dark copper red with a thick off white head. Strong aroma of heather honey, long in intensity. Smooth creamy mouthfeel and superb lacing. Mixed malt complex gives a silky delivery of sweet caramelised fruit mixed with copious amounts of sweet honey. Little hops of note in the zip past aftertaste. Finish is sweet and malty. Flavours are glazed with honey as a warming mead alcoholic note comes to the fore and slips down the throat. Not as stellar as the 12 but highly recommended none the less.
4.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 GuillaumeCL (41) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - MAY 14, 2012
From a 33cl bottle at Academie de la Biere in Paris. Pours a hazy brown with foamy head that dissipates and rings. Leaves a bit of lacing. Aroma is just wonderful, lots of yeast, some banana, and bubblegum. Taste is out of this world, malts, yeast, a bit of hops, a perfect sweet harmony with a sweet lingering aftertaste. Palate is a bit thick with moderate carbonation. Just a wonderful beer.
4.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20 Koskela (37) - Marysville, California, USA - MAY 11, 2012
As you pour you get a yeasty sweetness aroma. Its a hazy dark amber color you can see the yeast floating around. Its a sweet taste but not overpowering. Very malty. Then you get that alcohol taste. Over all you get a medium body taste of malty delight. I have not hade a beer yet from this abbey. Great buy and will buy again.

The second beer in my St Bernardus evening, a brown 330ml bottle best before 5th Apr 2012, drank on 1st March 2008.
Poured into my Westmalle bowl glass it looks a lovely ruby red, deep and clean appearance. The beige head stayed for the whole experience, which I always like to see.
Plum pudding and christmas cake mix come to mind in the aroma, but it isn’t strong and takes some finding. Burnt malts also in there somewhere.
The taste knocks spots off the 6.7% Pater 6 which is what I had prior to this (see how I did that?). This beer tastes like its aroma, plums, dried fruits (like found in a Christmas cake), malty, toasty and roasted.
Feels good, nicely balanced beer, the flavours stay and the beer is obviously well crafted.
As I stated earlier, I like a beer who’s head stays throughout the drink, this beer has that trait. It is also a dam good tasting beer.

Very dark brown pour, the aroma doesn’t really leave any distinctive sensations. Sadly I poured th beer wrong so the foam pretty much died instantly (or is that normal for this beer?). The taste itself is very good though! It has a roasted coffe taste, keeps me wanting from more!

Had this on tap at Mate Bar in Tel Aviv. Dark amber brown with a tan head. Smells like yeast, sweet dark fruits and some flowers. Taste is rich yet not overwhelming with spice, yeast, dark sugars and candy malts and sweet citrus hops. Med bodied. After taste has enough hops in it to keep it dry and balance the sweet flavors. Great brew!
