750ml bottle - Herring Creek beer tasting

Itís been awhile since I had a beer this stunning. Iíve had the opportunity to have the regular Speedway and itís always a pleasure to consume, but this is a showcase of what barrel aging can do to an already fantastic beer.

The beer pours out a basically perfect pour. At least a perfect pour to me. Completely black, dense light brown head, long lasting. An aroma just bursting at the seams with depth and complexity. Notes of bourbob, wood, anise, toffee, brown sugar, roastd malts, Tootsie Rolls, malt balls, milk chocolate, molasses...incredible.

The flavor profile echoes the aroma, but the intensity of the flavor is unmatched. Alcohol is much more present in the flavor (as expected) than the aroma, but even then it mixes well with the other flavors. Everything is so damned well balaced itís amazing. Mouthfeel is oily, creamy, dense. The beer just coats and clings to the glass and mouth like no other beer Iíve had before.

Simply put, this beer has everything that I want and look for in an imperial stout. Itís created amazingly well, and the time it spent in the bourbon barrel worked incredibly well. I cannot recommend this beer, if you can find it, enough.

Dark thick black body. Smells like chocolate fudge. Very thick mouthfeel. Probably the thickest beet Iíve ever had. Super sweet. Lots of whiskey taste. If you try to find coffee, you can find it over the chocolate and whisky. Really yummy.

Sample at the Uber-Kurt (10,000) Celebration on 12/13/2014 (2013, 2009 and 2007 (#167/447) bottles). Review is for the most recent, as it was past prime by the 2007 bottle. The beer pours inky black with a medium thick foamy khaki head that diminishes gradually to a film. Patchy lacing on the glass. Aroma of roasted malt, bourbon and chocolate. Full-bodied with flavors of oaky bourbon, chocolate malt , vanilla and coffee. The finish is oaky vanilla and chocolate liqueur. Excellent beer all around.

Bottle received in trade. Thank you bytemesis! Pours black with a rather small mocha head that doesnít trace much trace on the glass while dissipating. Smell is malty with roasted malts, burnt caramel, toffee, vanilla fudge, charred wood, roasted coconut, dark roast coffee, bitter chocolate, hay, moist soil and bourbon alcohol. Taste is sweet, slightly bitter and malty with roasted malts, burnt caramel, toffee, vanilla fudge, charred wood, roasted coconut, dark chocolate, dark roast coffee, moist soil, soy sauce and bourbon alcohol. Mouthfeel is round, soft, viscous, creamy, slightly boozy and near full bodied. Finish is slightly sweet, slightly bitter and malty with roasted malts, burnt caramel, toffee, vanilla fudge, charred wood , dark roast coffee, bitter chocolate, moist soil and bourbon alcohol. Really good!

2014 vintage. this was incredibly disappointing. how can a superior non-ba stout like speedway actually deteriorate upon contact with a bourbon barrel? what kind of wal-mart brand of bourbon was sitting in those barrels? aroma: bourbon, some oak. non-descript bourbon and oak. appearance: dark black w/ creamy brown head. taste is just bourbon and oak. not much chocolate. no coffee. little vanilla.

Bottle shared at the RBESG 2014, grand tasting 10/08/2014 Craft Beer Co Clerkenwell. Huges thanks to Bruce for this one. Aroma is big chocolate, rich dark chocolate, layered in oak and bourbon booze. Viscous oily, opaque black with a lasting medium tan head. Flavour is toasted coconut, vanilla bean and oak, rich dark choclate and smooth deept raost. Nicely integrated Barrel character really adds to the base beer. Palate is Thick and velvety, smooth carbonation and hint of sweetness.

Pours black with a medium tan head. Very nice pitch black thatís kinda matte black. Aromas of chocolate, coffee, bourbon, vanilla, muscovado sugar, slight alcohol fumes and some slight berry tartness. Taste is incredible! Complex, yet amazingly well integrated: chocolate, coffee, bourbon, slight vanilla, muscovado sugar, some hints of berry tartness. Mouthfeel is smooth and velvety with almost no carbonation. Just bloody amazing!

Pours black with low tan head. Aroma of bourbon, vanilla, muscovado, chocolate, dried dates and prunes, raisins, very sweet, very good! Taste is an odyssey of sweet bourbon barrel coffee, vanilla and chocolate imperial stout. Boozy and sweet lingering finish. Rich creamy body with soft carbonation.

Un liquoreux festin cafťine aux assauts dťcadents de bourbon et de chocolat noir et gras. Líamertume est longue mais ne bouscule pas. Dessert incontournable.

Pretty straight bourbon smell. Full body with low carbonation but not what I would call thick or oily. Taste is nice chocolatey, malty, and bourbon.

2012 vintage bottle, poured into snifter glass. Appearance is jet black, minimal tan head that quickly fades to a ring, leaving some swirls of lacing. Nice legs on this beer as well. Aromas are dominated by bourbon. Light hints of roast, coffee and chocolate linger...but, the sting of bourbon keeps coming forward. The taste is more subdued than I expected in terms of the barrel inflection. Nice balance between a creamy chocolate and bitter coffee backbone. Nice roasted notes blend with the bourbon barrel character and harmonizes nicely with some oak, vanilla and slight alcohol notes.
