Weíve matured our Russian Imperial Stout in premium bourbon barrels for up to one year to create the perfect blend of flavors. Notes of oak, vanilla, and bourbon add another level of complexity to this beerís already massive flavor profile of chocolate, Ryan Bros. Coffee, and roasted barley. Designed to be enjoyed now or aged in the bottle for years to come, this special release is truly a unique beer that is smooth as it is rare.

750ml bottle - Herring Creek beer tasting

Itís been awhile since I had a beer this stunning. Iíve had the opportunity to have the regular Speedway and itís always a pleasure to consume, but this is a showcase of what barrel aging can do to an already fantastic beer.

The beer pours out a basically perfect pour. At least a perfect pour to me. Completely black, dense light brown head, long lasting. An aroma just bursting at the seams with depth and complexity. Notes of bourbob, wood, anise, toffee, brown sugar, roastd malts, Tootsie Rolls, malt balls, milk chocolate, molasses...incredible.

The flavor profile echoes the aroma, but the intensity of the flavor is unmatched. Alcohol is much more present in the flavor (as expected) than the aroma, but even then it mixes well with the other flavors. Everything is so damned well balaced itís amazing. Mouthfeel is oily, creamy, dense. The beer just coats and clings to the glass and mouth like no other beer Iíve had before.

Simply put, this beer has everything that I want and look for in an imperial stout. Itís created amazingly well, and the time it spent in the bourbon barrel worked incredibly well. I cannot recommend this beer, if you can find it, enough.

Type: 12-oz. draft (was supposed to be eight ounces) Glass: Clear snifter glass From: Alpine Beer Company Pub in Alpine, Calif. Price: $8.00 Purchased: Feb. 23, 2016 Consumed: Feb. 23, 2016 Misc.: AleSmith Tap Takeover night First time reviewing this, but third time tasting it. Picked this over Vietnamese Coffee variant, assuming I would get to have that next (this did not happen). Loved it the last two times I tasted it and expecting at least a 4.50. Poured a black color with one finger of khaki tan head when I got it. Minima lacing on the sides of the glass. Average retention. (Sight - 3.75) Smelled toffee, smooth milk chocolate, buttery bourbon syrup, caramel, roasty malts and wet cocoa powder. (Smell - 4.50) Tasted much boozier than the smell. Super hot from the get-go. Bourbon heavy, chocolate, toffee, caramel and smooth dark milk chocolate. Bourbon was just overwhelming. (Taste - 4.25) Full body. Creamy texture. Average carbonation. Boozy, warming finish. (Feel - 4.25) Not quite as good as the last few times I had this at AleSmith. Not sure what it was, but picked a bad time to review this. Will have it again for sure though. (Overall - 4.25) 4.28 95 A

UPDATED: APR 8, 2016 Pours oily black color, slightly haze, with foamy brown head. Visually low carbonation. Aroma is rich and complex: where to start? Dark and roasted malts aroma, with notes of dark chocolate, toffee, molasses, coffee, cocoa beans, hazelnuts, hop aroma with notes of dark, stone fruits, like cherries, berries, plums, prunes; then bourbon, vanilla, wood, etc.... Flavor: complex and rich as aroma or even more: prevailing notes of coffee, bourbon, dark malts, hops...they takes on all ingredients, which I mentioned by aroma, but they are perfectly balanced in one unit. Body is full, texture silky smooth, carbonation is low. Finish is sticky, dry, slightly bitter. Alcohol warmth is gentle noticeable. Incredible! For sure one of the very best imperial stouts!

Roasted aromas of whiskey and wood. Deep dark beer with creamy brown head. The creamy roasted flavor is thick and carry the vanilla bourbon softly. Really good.

Top marks to Benny H for this wan...
Thick black and a cushion of brassy tan head. Nose is rich sweet strums of melted toffee and booze, very little choc unless youíre reaching for it. All in this was a big steam ash of soft coconut, lightest drying choc and the best boozy sweetness Iíve had in a long time. A real hug of a mouthfeel, prices of bourbon on the linger. Came and went too quickly. Would have loved a cheeky blend of this and the Hawawawain.

Bottle. Black with tight tan head. Glorious aroma, coconut, vanilla, chocolate, coffee, molasses, char. Taste is beautifully balanced, coconut, chocolate, coffee, vanilla, molasses, char, all in equal proportions and nothing overpowering. Silky smooth and creamy texture with moderately long finish. This beer is as close to perfection as youíre going to get
