This has been the taste of this, the winter in this, the foul year of our Lord, 200and8. Something about it keeps me coming back. It pours brown, caramel if you will. Nice carbonation. Purdy, if I may. It is a little sweet to the taste, at least until the hops hit you. Ouch. Unlike any other old ale, this old man packs the punch of a young indian prizefighter composed of sweet, sticky hops. Or something to that effect. So the hops add a nice piney citrosity to the mix. It, in effect, has a balancing effect on the big maltiness the old man has packed on. I continually enjoy the hell out of the fresh ones, looking forward to taking the suggestion of Southern Tier and aging a few of these old men.

Dark caramel color pouring with little head. Spicy malt aroma. Bitter malt taste. Pretty good. Not too goofy.

Nice winter brew but nothing special. Works for a session beer, but not overly excited about this offering. Well balanced, but nothing to get excited about.

Hoppy winter ale, tastes very much in the style of an English bitter. Floral and malty. Alcohol warming bite and end but not too much.

Pours caramel. Great hop flavor and aroma. Another great offering from the Southern Tier brewers.

2.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 7/20
The nose is hop forward - florals with citrus notes. A quickly deminishing ivory head adorns a clear dark amber pour which produces minimal lacing. The taste reinforces the nose. Florals, citrus, pine. Medium-light body and medium carbonation. Overall, while enjoyable this brew is better suited to a warm summer evening than a winter warmer. Also, being an Old Ale, I expected more of a malt presence and a somewhat fuller mouthfeel. Because of those two flaws, I canít give it a very good rating. leather,

Tradesman, Brooklyn tap ($6): Pours amber brown with beige head. Aroma is dark fruity, nutmeg, cinnamon, bread, and brown sugar. Taste is similar. Lightly hopped; somewhat spiced. Fortunately, this ainít too sweet. Body is pretty light, especially for a purported old ale. Good beer though.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pours a deep amber with hues of brown and with exceptional clarity. A light stream of bubbles rises up to meet a fat head of cream colored foam. Good retention and laces well. The nose is tangerine and brown sugar. Hop floral and a faint bit of cinnamon and nutmeg. The dark fruits are deep within the bready malt and lend a crafted sweetness. Taste is spirited with light tangerine and dark fruit. A slight hop bitter and a nice biscuit. Has a juicy overall fruit quality in the drink and sweet bread that seems to go on forever. Carbonation brings a ticklish mouthfeel to this and the body of the beer is full but not too heavy.
This was a cheerful winter ale that wasnít a spice bomb. The spices were light and the bread never ended. The hops gave it a vibrance and it drank with a bit of caramel sweetness. pretty nice and before you know it you will have had 3 or 4 of these.
