COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
With the onset of winter, the brewer’s mind turns to providing warmth. For our winter seasonal, Southern Tier offers Old Man Winter Ale, a rich and complex amalgam of hops and barley that will put the feeling back in your toes and lift your spirits above the snow. Old Man Winter throws a deep and inviting hue with a thickness that clings to the glass and the warmth of an open flame. Because of its high alcohol content, Old Man Winter is a heady brew that encourages sipping and pondering its essential richness. Drink it fresh now, or cellar some bottles to see how this old man becomes wiser with age.

This has been the taste of this, the winter in this, the foul year of our Lord, 200and8. Something about it keeps me coming back. It pours brown, caramel if you will. Nice carbonation. Purdy, if I may. It is a little sweet to the taste, at least until the hops hit you. Ouch. Unlike any other old ale, this old man packs the punch of a young indian prizefighter composed of sweet, sticky hops. Or something to that effect. So the hops add a nice piney citrosity to the mix. It, in effect, has a balancing effect on the big maltiness the old man has packed on. I continually enjoy the hell out of the fresh ones, looking forward to taking the suggestion of Southern Tier and aging a few of these old men.

Bottle. Golfen brown. Clear with small head. Caramel raisin malty aromas. Good body with some sweetness. Not my kind of brew though well made.

Mein erstes Southern Tier riecht fruchtig, herb-hopfig. Geschmacklich ist es fruchtig-herb, im Nachgeschmack recht herb mit fruchtig-herben Aromen. Die Herbe ist insgesamt schon sehr intensiv, der Alkohol kommt hingegen kaum durch. Fazit: Ordentlich! Test vom 28.8.2010, Gebinde: Glasflasche Noten: 10,10,11,11,9,11 - 10,65

On tap @ Radio Maria. Medium amber with golden highlights and an off-white head that laces thickly. Aroma is bread toffee and light green hops. I’m pleasantly surprised at the absence of Christmas spices. Flavours are toffee malts with toasty and nutty nuances, and medium grassy/citrus hops. Warming finish. Balanced and tasty.

(Bottle from Tully’s) Brown-amber with a sloppy tan head. Light aroma of caramel-toffee, perhaps toasted. Mouthfeel fairly smooth, medium-full. Sloppy, broken bits of lacing. Malty flavor of light caramel-toffee, perhaps lightly toasted, weakish chocolate, perhaps licorice. Mild alcohol burn.

Pours a beautiful copper amber with a thin creamy off-white head. Nose is hoppy. Nice and creamy on the palate, the taste is predominately hops with a hint of malt and grains. Tastes more like an IPA or a pale ale than a winter ale. Try it with beer nuts after a round of golf.

Snifter from bottle. A: very weak nose, slight malt and slight hop. Slight carmel. App: very pretty honey-amber color. No head, slight lacing. T: fairly hoppy up front, slightly malty on the back, with a hop aftertaste that has a medium linger. P: slight bite on tongue, goes down smooth. Far below average for a winter warmer.

I had this beer again and it’s making me love winter beers all over again. Too bad it’s spring now
