4.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20 sound67 (223) - Offenbach, - NOV 3, 2009
UPDATED: DEC 21, 2009 50cl dark brown bottle, as pictured.
Pours a perfect, clear mahogany with a big, frothy beige head. Good retention, plenty of lacing.
Aroma of roasted malt, toffee and ripe plums. Body is a little lighter than that of "Golden Pride" and "Vintage Ale", but ultra smooth, with low carbonation. Oily mouth feel.
Complex taste of caramel, coffee, and dark fruit, but with a compensating note of dry hops that quickly negates the initial sweetness. Gets more bitter as you keep drinking and the beer warm up a little. Dry, hoppy finish and lingering, medium bitter after taste. Despite the increased abv, there’s no real alcoholic note to speak of. Smooth!
Another superbly balanced and eminently sessionable brew from Fuller’s (I must get around to visiting their Chiswick brewery next time I’m in London), with sweet and bitter notes superbly complementing each other. A wee heavy winner in the strong ale category. Drink irresponsibly!

Fuller’s continues to dominate my top 10. I love the balance. I love the almost caramel flavor that exists in perfect harmony with the nutty bitterness.

4.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 BlackHaddock (1709) - Shropshire, ENGLAND - APR 25, 2012
Brown 500ml bottle, best before 18th May 2011, drank 17th Jan 2010. Poured into a vase shaped pint glass.
Good thick tan/off white/cream coloured head, which produced some heavy lacing as the beer sank down the glass. The body was clear and a copper/brown colour, very beery looking!
Malts and molasses win the aroma battle, a sort of rich ’malt-loaf’ with butter lashed on smell.
The taste is also malt dominated, a little sweet at first mouthtouch, then it begin to dry out in the finish with a hop bitterness arriving in the aftertaste.
The alcohol is easy to find and sits well within the malty richness of the brew.
4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 ACD (93) - Dublin, IRELAND - APR 19, 2012
50cl bottle. Pours deep amber with thin but lasting off-white head - medium to thick lacing. Aroma has plenty of dark fruits, raisins, bread, spices, deep caramel, slightly roasted malt, touch of floral hop. Taste is incredibly full, with dark fruit playing a big part alongside thick bready and caramel malt, slight roasted woody notes, warming winter spices, floral and earthy hop flavours near the finish. Great balance - very smooth for such a complex ale, really enjoyed it.
4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 Swaroga (355) - Brussels, BELGIUM - APR 16, 2012
50cl bottle. Dark brown with small, tanned head. Nose : small aromas overall : coffee, nuts, floral, dough, roasted bread. Sip : Oily with medium density and quite creamy. Sweet with coffee notes followed by floral and fruity hops finish. Aftertaste is mild and a bit like sweet coffee and cake aftertaste. Overall : enjoyable and interesting beer. For the moment one of my favorite english ales.

Deep amber. The nose is loaded with an array of spices and some dates and nuts. Medium bodied, this attacks the palate with a cascade of spices. Like Christmas cake, but with a savory flair. Balanced with an elegant display of hops.
