3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
UPDATED: MAR 26, 2009 Taste 3/9 bottle. Looks: Murky and ruddy brown with a smattering of bubbles. Aroma: Quite hoppy (rather fresh bottle) with some sweet malt and sour yeast must. Taste: Very hoppy barleywine with sweet malt and spice. Some must and raisin. Not really noticing the abv at all. Almost a IIPA/Barleywine cross. I like it. Iím sure aged the barleywine side would become more to the front. Iím enjoying it like this.

Bottle share taster. Early 2009. Hazy dark gold. Aroma of raisin. Taste is sharp sweetness with a blasting dry bitterness.

Wow! Hops galore. Medium body which is slightly creamy & smooth but the hops are overpowering here. Leaves some intense bitterness. Not quite my cup of tea for the style.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Copper with a straight etching of cream foam. Smells of hops, rich malts with some tea and caramel and some nicely woven in toffee and sweetness. Flavor is sweet with a good bitterness on the backside with some caramel and a gobs of malt syrup. I like the flavor. Medium bodied with sharp carb and a semi dry finish. I like this beer quite a lot.

Pours a dark orange-amber. Has a strong aroma that can be smelled even when the beet is down - malt, floral hops, fruit. Has a sweet flavor to atrat with some fruity malt, caramel and light citrus hops, but it quickly turns bitter and then sour from the hops.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
I had this at Global Brew. Pours orangish with off white head. Taste Carmel, hoppy, strong. I thought this was so so. I would skip this down the road.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Aged 9 years (2004 vintage): This beer was aged in Stoneís cellar for the past nine years. Wow! Its nose is of a very carefully aged barleywine, very soft and easy, almost dessert-like in its light, fruity sweetness. At nine years old it almost seems a little watered down at first. Overall, itís just what youíd expect of Old Guardian, but soft, smooth, and light, holding up well to the aging.

4.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Vintage 2011 poured November 2013. Poured cloudy orange brown with a thin frothy head that dissipated after the first sip. Very very faint alcohol bite considering the ABV. Very malty but not terribly strong tasting like most barley wines Iíve had.

3.7 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Poured into a snifter out of a 22oz bomber. 2011 vintage.
Pours a clear dark copper with just a fleeting white head that fades to a thin ring around the top of the beer.
The aroma really disappoints me. It is lacking nearly entirely giving off just a slight metallic note with some caramel and pine very distant in the background. Not sure if this is a product of the age but the aroma has really fallen off.
Thankfully, the taste is more substantial than the aroma. Sweet, bready grain along with a strong bitterness from piny hops. Strong wood notes along with some hints of sherry from what i presume to be some oxidation. Alcohol makes an appearance towards the finish but it is only fleeting leaving a pleasant warmth. Mouthfeel is silky and a bit sticky but not too sweet.
Overall, this barleywine has aged really well apart from the nose. The bitterness is still there but the aroma is lacking. Not my favorite barleywine but really good.

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Stone Old Guardian 2013 vintage. There is a heavy caramel aroma along with other malt flavorings. It is a cloudy, amber color with an extremely fluffy, clingy light brown head. It has a creamy texture with a burst of caramel flavors with a tinge of hops. The combination of bitter and sweet flavors is complex and delightful.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Poured from bottle to glass. Amber-reddish with off-white head. Aroma of biscuit, caramel, hops, cirtus, pine, resin, sugar, pepper. Mouthfeel is great with light/medium body and great carbonation. Taste is initially sweet with a bit astrigency from roastedmalt and nice bitter finish. A slight bitter essence lingers. Overall, this is a really nice American style barleywine and is a tad hop-forward....which is kind of expected from Stone.
