Smuttynose IPA is a physical salute to the glory of the American hop grower. The citrusy hop flavor coming from a mixture of Simcoe and Santiams is pleasantly balanced by a smooth bitterness from the Amarillo hops. The beer itself is light bodied and crisp with a golden color that will throw a slight haze, as we bottle it unfiltered. At 65 IBU’s, this is definitely not a training-wheels IPA, but is meant for hop lovers looking to satisfy their craving in a way that’s not easy to find. We think they’ll be quite pleased.

UPDATED: JUL 19, 2009 I think this may be the best IPA I have ever had, in fact this is what launched me into an IPA frenzy this year. Sweet sweet hops and spice, what an IPA should be.

Ugly, opaque gold with heavy sediment (due to unfiltered nature as stated on the label). Not your regular hoppy citrusy IPA. Straw, grass, bitter. Full-bodied finish.

Poured 2 twelve ounce bottles into an imperial pint glass. Great cloudy color capped of with a frothy long standing head. Without getting into grass notes and straw, this IPA seems to be a bench mark for the breed. Use this to calibrate your IPA meter.

12 ounce bottle. Bright amber orange color. Small bubbly white head. Grassy hop bouquet with a nutty malt backdrop. Big bitter hop smack in the face upfront. Seems a bit out of balance. All hops and little malt.

12 oz. bottle, thanks to Ian. Pours a slightly, hazy orange, with a small, bubbly head. The aroma is butterscotch, grapefruit, rye, and honey. Very bitter, sweet, and a little off. Medium body, astringent, and grainy. Overall, this is a bitter, slightly off-putting IPA. Apparently, this is a little old, but it still holds up pretty well.

Pours a classic golden color with a fine off-white head with a little lacing. Not overly aromatic. Faint wisps of bread and hops. This beer is all about the big, bitter finish. There’s a little malt up front, but it gets dank with hint of grapefruit in a hurry. It’s almost more like an imperial or double IPA.

Ins Glas ergießt sich ein oranges Bier mit schöner Schaumkrone. Geruch sehr malzig, hopfig fruchtig, bitter. Geschmack intensiv fruchtig hopfig, stark malzig.

12 oz bottle poured into tumbler..golden color..slightly hoppy, resin, pine, floral aroma..citrus didn’t come through as much as I would have liked..but a solid IPA nonetheless.

I’m fairly new to beer and am really enjoying figuring out what I like. It didn’t take long to discover that a strong hoppy, bitter taste topped my list. IPAs are my current passion and I haven’t found one (locally) that beats Portsmouth, New Hampshire’s Smuttynose Finestkind IPA. It’s bright with delicious citrus notes, and a most pleasant bitter finish that lingers at the back of the throat and up into the sinuses. Exactly what I love! While I do like some of the double and triple IPAs that are out there, I find that they lose some of the ’bright’ character that I enjoy so much in this IPA.

Lemony citrus aroma dominates this beer. Pours clear orange with great head and lacing. Finishes bitter and a little sour. Comes together well, though it’s all hops. Soft carbonation. Tap at Churchkey.
