COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
One of the earliest examples of the Russian Imperial Stout in the United States, Expedition Stout offers immensely complex flavors crafted specifically with vintage aging in mind, as its profile will continue to mature and develop over the years. A huge malt body is matched to a heady blend of chocolate, dark fruits, and other aromas. Intensely bitter in its early months, the flavors will slowly meld and grow in depth as the beer ages.
Available October-March.

Easy to see why this is near the top of the rankings. This is a fabulous brew, a classic example of the style. Black color with great brown foam, settles fairly quickly leaving lots of lacing. Roast and chocolate form in the nose with a surprising hint of hops wafting up as well. My only ding is that the aroma is a bit faint. Hop bitterness comes through on the palate as well - more so than any other imperial stout that i can recall - along with cocoa, coffee, and an earthiness. Long lasting bitter finish. Flavor profile is much more intense than the aroma.

Best non bourbon aged stout ever. Great pour. Finish shows that it is well made

Sweet caramel, toffee flavors, but not overwhelmingly sweet, especially given the alcohol level. A bit of dried fruits. Long finish. Complex flavors. Roasted coffee flavors, hint of smokiness. Remarkably full bodied. Almost "well used machine oil", but in a positive way. This is a great beer.

12 oz bottle @ home. Thanks Al! Pours jet black with a minimal tan head. Nose is full of roasted dark malts, chocolate and some light vanilla. Nice thick mouth feel. Taste is chocolate, lots of roasted malts, some liquorice, light smoke and some sweet fudge.

Bottle. Whoa!!! This was a big beer. Black, velvety, thick. Big chocolate cooled head. Aroma was coffee, chocolate. Taste, was thick, rich coffee and chocolate but one can still detect the hoppy undertone. Really great!

On tap at Macgregor’s. Black pour with a thick tan head. Aroma is heavy roast and sticky smelling with some caramel, molasses and some dark cocoa. The flavor is huge and rich with a dark slick body, featuring notes of dark cocoa nibs, roast black malts, a bit of molasses, dark earthy caramel and a warming boozy dark cocoa finish. Sweet and roasty, full of sticky black malts and mild sweetness. The alcohol is hidden well.

Bottle. Apprearance: oily, black, with nice brown head. Aroma: milk chocolate, nuts, dried fruits, christmas cake, figs. Taste: although it’s 10,5% vol., I couldn’t feel alcohol. In taste also some coffee, again figs, nuts, chocolate, very rich! Nice long bitter pleasant aftertaste. Nice ballance between sweetness and bitterness. Can not feel saltyness, which is good.

12 oz bottle, poured to a snifter. Jet black with lacey tan head. Aroma is huge dark fruit and complex malt, with coffee/roast overtones. Flavor is smooth and rich, with notes of dark raisins, roast and melanoidins. Hop bitterness on the medium high side, but not detracting. Worth coming back year after year.

12oz bottle. 2013 aged 7 months. Pours pitch black with minimal tan head. Dark goodness of burnt chocolate, coffee, caramel, aged fruits. Very smooth. Everything a RIS should be. Highly recommend if you can find it. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

I cannot believe I have not rated this yet. Aged only 2 months. Aroma is dark fruit figs, chalky, plums, chocolate, resins. Taste seems to change every sip. Chocolate, dark fruits, lots of dark roasted malts. Aftertaste is medium to long with the alcohol slightly more pronounced. An absolutely great beer! Will definitely cellar some bottles.
