COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In the early 1900s, the village of De Panne, close to the French border, was famous for two things -- the ‘Pannepots,’ or fishing boats, that could be seen along the coast, and the unique dark ale enjoyed by the local fishermen. Our Old Fisherman’s Ale is a tribute to these hardy sailors and their rich, flavorful brew. Unfiltered. Unpasteurized. Bottle-conditioned in 33cl and 75cl.

bottle at home bought some time ago in Prague. Vintage 2014. almost black color, small coffee-colored. smells sour, sour cherries, some malt, dried fruits, some sweetness. smell is balanced between sweet- and sourness, does not work so well for me though. full body, rather strong carbonation, full bubbly mouthfeel. tastes sour, some sweetness, acidic, citric, a bit astringent, some notes of fruit jam, light medical / metallic notes, malts. rather dry / lightly sour / also fruity finish. rather good, I like the taste a bit better than the smell.

Aroma: dried fruits, cellar, chocolate, coffee. Appearance: deep black color, beige head. Taste: almost no bitterness, chocoalte, coffee, ginger, roasted malts, semi-dry. Palate: full body and low carbonation, roasted finish. Overall: Great beer, aroma is weak, but all in all very drinkable beer with a nice complex taste.

0,33 l bottle as a souvenir from my colleagues’s trip to Antwerp over New Year’s Day, 2014 vintage. Clear, almost opaque, very dark reddish brown to black with a thin, frothy, slowly diminishing, brown head. Pleasant, fruity-malty aroma of dark ripe fruits, cane sugar and a bit of coffee. Very intense, sweetish fruity-malty taste of prunes, figs and raisins, accompanied by flavours of cane sugar, dark chocolate and a bit of coffee. Rather long, chocolaty, slightly warming and even a bit hoppy finish. Full body, creamy and smooth mouthfeel, very soft carbonation. Great beer. Incredibly tasty, great palate and only a little alcohol can be detected. It is somehow even refreshing due to its fruitiness. Very dangerous!

Lighter hazy brown, thin enough ringed head. Dusty berry, scratchy choc caramel flakes and damp oakiness. Lean sweetness is what takes me up on the Pot, it’s thin and passable enrichment with a thicker mouthfeel than many brassy towns with some liquorice embers. Finishes rich, spongey and steady choc.

On tap at Doherty’s Ale House in Warwick. Deep purplish brown. Thin head. Very sweet to start, smoothes out after a while with dark earthy, raisony notes. Very underwhelming.

2014 ed. Bottle (33cl) from Vinmonopolet (Aker Brygge), Oslo. Very dark brown colour. Finger-thick beige head that reduces fairly quickly to a small ring and scattered foam islands. Sweet malty nose with rich, dried fruits, coffee and spices like star anise, vanilla, nutmeg. Full body, soft carbonation. Taste has a lovely balance between sweet malt, mildly acidic fruit and some spicy bitterness in the finish.

From a bottle into a snifter 2013 vintage. Pours a opaque black with large light brown head. Nose is great with lots of spices, anise, cinnamon, nutmeg, toffee, some dark dried fruit with hints of yeast, plums, raisins. Medium to high carbonation, a bit of spunk to it almost like a little heat, oily body, sweet, very little bitterness. Long finish lots of spices lingering on the pallet, a hint of alcohol. Well made beer, enjoyable, just not entirely the flavors i’m looking for.

33cl bottle. Dark brown pour with thin brown head, no lacing. Aromas of raisins, toffee and coffee. Taste is bitter, a bit sweet. Coffee, licorice and grilled vegetables. Little to no carbonation. Strong aftertaste of spices and alcohol. Interesting, but a bit sweet for my taste.

Tried in bottle, bought in Austria at Tribaun. Colour is dark brown/dark amber. Thin white head, dissalates fast. Aroma is red wine, plumbs, caramel and malts. Taste is same as aroma. Similar to a barley wine. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
