COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In the early 1900s, the village of De Panne, close to the French border, was famous for two things -- the ‘Pannepots,’ or fishing boats, that could be seen along the coast, and the unique dark ale enjoyed by the local fishermen. Our Old Fisherman’s Ale is a tribute to these hardy sailors and their rich, flavorful brew. Unfiltered. Unpasteurized. Bottle-conditioned in 33cl and 75cl.

UPDATED: DEC 7, 2012 2011. Absolutely gorgeous beer: deep, dark brown that progressively devolves into mahogany, red, orange, and yellow as you get to the edge. Beautiful, substantive tan head and a little lacing. Sweet, seductive aromatics: figs, prunes, toffee, a suggestion of guava, caramel, black cherries. Awesome! The alcohol does prickle inside the nostrils, but the sweet bouquet of fruity esters and sweet malts is irresistible. On the tongue, it’s equally delicious, if less alcoholic. It starts out sweet, toys with the tart for a bit, and has a somewhat dry finish, evoking something like sweet limetta peel (or some other sweet citrus peel anyway). The mouthfeel is truly amazing, with playful carbonation and a medium-to-full body. The overall aftertaste is sweet and fruity and, oh man, those burps are special. Excellent beer. I wish I could get it at the supermarket or local liquor store here in Texas.

Draft @ basement beer bar in Aalborg. Amazing caramel aroma with overripe red berries, dried dark fruit, alcohol. Reddish brown with tiny off-white head. Quite sweet, more fruit. Soapy texture, great body, finish is longlasting, light carbonation.

Surprisingly dark for the style (drunk in a Belgian Strong Dark beer tasting). Astringent quality from the dark malt with notes of liquorice and spices. Intense and full body. Very good.

[2011] 33cl bottle. Slow gusher. Murky mahogany with a foamy beige head. Lots of sediments. Flavors are bread, dried fruits, cherries, plum, dates, dark chocolate, molasses, brown sugar, toffee, licorice, tobacco and spices with vinous and slight oxidized notes. Pleasant alcohol warmth. Full body, bright light carbonation, creamy and sticky texture. Delicious.

The "Fisherman’s Ale". Not Struise’s first, but the beer with which they first attracted international attention. A wonderfully complex and rich, profound brew, dark bronze colour, hazy, creamy head, very fruity and deeply malty profile, candi sugar, complex with pleasant drying spicy notes, elegant yeastiness and characterful hop bitterishness in the finish along with warming, liqueurish alcohol. Very agreeable, a great beer indeed.
