COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In the early 1900s, the village of De Panne, close to the French border, was famous for two things -- the ‘Pannepots,’ or fishing boats, that could be seen along the coast, and the unique dark ale enjoyed by the local fishermen. Our Old Fisherman’s Ale is a tribute to these hardy sailors and their rich, flavorful brew. Unfiltered. Unpasteurized. Bottle-conditioned in 33cl and 75cl.

Enormous, dense head that sticks around a long time, leaving decent rings of lacing. Deep aroma of cocoa, red and purple fruits (cherries, cranberries, grapes, plums, raisins), yeast, breads, and a hint of ... Dr. Pepper? How neat. Flavor - this is the smoothest 10% ABV beer I have ever drunk. Holy moly - it is too easy to drink this! Best-hidden alcohol ever. Be careful, because it’s really tasty, too. VERY well-balanced on the acid front, which is typically my foremost complaint among some otherwise great Belgian Strongs. 5 on the palate for sure. I’d like a little more aftertaste, but what is there is really scrumptious - all the aforementioned fruits, especially the red ones, lots of creamy maltiness, and a finish of bread and fruit. Nom! My special orders for December have gone so well. I’m such a happy beer geek! UPDATE: I am now tasting some spices in addition to all that other stuff. This just gets more and more interesting.

Pours a really dark brown with a thin off-white head. Aroma of dark chocolate and booze. Taste is medium sweet and a low level of apparent bitterness. Flavors of chocolate, molasse, raisins and various dark fruits. Quite similar to a Rochefort 10 but with an even nicer mouthfeel (creamy). Marvelous!

Poured from 2011 bottle, pours a very dark brown, nearly black with a thin light brown head, aroma has a lot of dark fruit mixed in with some spices and caramel, flavor is pretty sweet with a lot of chocolate and dark fruit on the front end, sweet finish with a nice bubbly mouthfeel, the abv is tasted a little bit in the finish, solid all around.

Pours black with a fading tan head. Nose shows chocolate, spiced figs, prunes, caramel, burnt brown sugar, candi sugar. Lovely. More burnt sugar as a flavours along with some roasted malt, bready malt and spices. Could use a more syrupy body and creamier carbonation.

Actually preferred this to the Reserva version. Bottle at Pizza Paradiso in Dupont Circle. Slightly floral on front end with a fairly boozy finish.

(2011) Pours dark and opaque with a medium tan head. Aroma is heavy sweet malts, prunes, and maybe a little clove - there’s also a little alcohol in the background. Taste is really unique. Initially you get a heavy malt flavor then, almost immediately, an alcohol sweetness dominates. Afterwards, a thick, oily, earthy maltiness envelopes the tastebuds for a great finish. Hard to pinpoint individual flavors probably because of the age. Would like to compare with a fresh one.

Dark brown pour with a tan head. Aromas of dried fruits, malt, and yeast notes. Complex flavors of figs, plums, brown sugar, and malty goodness. Abv is well hidden. Awesome brew.

2011 Bottle. Pours a murky dark brown with coarse, light brown head. Settles in minutes with no lacing. Aroma is fruity, plum, stone fruit, mild alcohol. Flavor is fruity, plum, fig, dark stone fruit, with a malty, toffee, and mild alcohol finish. The alcohol is well masked as expected, beer is very well balanced. Soft carbonation with a medium body and smooth texture. Dark, fruity, rich, a tasty brew.
