4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 Westmeister (589) - Atlanta, Georgia, USA - MAY 22, 2012
Bottle. Pours mahogany with a small light tan head. Aroma of toffee, dark fruit, spicy yeast and a bit of alcohol. Flavor of raisins, a tart yeast bite, burnt sugar and not hardly any booze. Lively carbonation that lends to tangy mouthfeel. Great brew.
3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 sulawang (220) - British Columbia, CANADA - MAY 20, 2012
pours jet black, small head, thin micro CO2 retention. Heavy caramel malts on the nose. A rich malted caramel flavour up front, transitions into figs, dates, prunes, chocolate. Medium-high depth, medium complexity, good transitions, great depth, good drinkability. Quite a heavy beer, the malts and richness weigh you down while the ABV hits hard but stealthily.
4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 tombyars (1102) - Saltcoats, SCOTLAND - MAY 17, 2012
Tasted this in the Delirium Cafe, Brussels in April 2012. 2010 vintage. 33cl bottle. Pours a dark oily black in colour with a thick tan head. Strong liquorice notes are long in the intensity. Thick oily mouthfeel and good lacing. Dark malts give a distinct flavour of black treacle and liquorice with roasted undertones. Difficult to detect any hop resins in the aftertaste as the dark malts overwhelm the flavours. Finish is strong and robust with dark malt to the fore. Sweet liquorice flavours still forever present in the dry, moreish finish. A well crafted Belgian Strong Ale but not as good as Rochefort 10 in my opinion though.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 maneliquor (1189) - Perth, AUSTRALIA - MAY 14, 2012
Bottle from Struise webshop. 2010 vintage. Pours chestnut brown with a small off white head. Nose is very sweet and lightly spiced. A touch of candy sugar there with soft notes of hay. A little too sweet for me. Taste begins with milk chocolate and spices with lightly charred malts. Everything works well and transitions nicely but its not amazing. A good beer though
4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 Lowenbrau (350) - SPAIN - MAY 10, 2012
750ml bottle. Malty, candy, and spice aromas. Pours dak copper, with average white head, some lacing and persistance. Medium body and average carbonation. Taste is malty, herbal, candy, some berries... really complex, but very well balanced, being tasty and non saturating. Very enjoyable.
3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 eczematic (1297) - Sydney, AUSTRALIA - MAY 10, 2012
tastes a hell of a lot like rochefort 10, only less subtle. a big chewy malty and spicy ale, as brown as a beer can taste brown: gravy, chocolate, mole sauce, brown sugar, etc. rich and opulent to a degree few belgian beers attempt (perhaps why it’s a ratebeer sort of beer) but still dry. the thing that is really cool about it is a kind of winelike fruity sourness that winds the palate up. salty too. plenty of coriander evident, maybe something peppery too. perhaps a bit heavy where i like belgian ales to be zippy and frothy and phenolic.
