In the early 1900s, the village of De Panne, close to the French border, was famous for two things -- the ‘Pannepots,’ or fishing boats, that could be seen along the coast, and the unique dark ale enjoyed by the local fishermen. Our Old Fisherman’s Ale is a tribute to these hardy sailors and their rich, flavorful brew. Unfiltered. Unpasteurized. Bottle-conditioned in 33cl and 75cl.

Pours a five-finger+ light tan pillowy head that fades slowly leaving a good lace. Black color. Sweet spicy nose. Light-medium carbonation and very heavy bodied. Flavor is sweet, spicy and complex; high ABV is hidden. Clean finish. I don’t see anything wrong with it. $5.20 for a 330ml bottle from Tully’s Beer & Wine Wells, Me.

Dark beer with taste of ripe plum, fresh liquorice and sugar candy. Very good, but not my type ... to take as a glass of dessert

2011 bottle. no head retention is visible in this dark brown to black ale. The slight rim of lacing present is a light tan color. the aroma is big and chewy with big sweet fig notes. a subtle fall spice character shows itself and seems to play nicely with the sweet maple/chocolate oatmeal aromatics. Med/high mouthfeel, real smooth, low/medium carbonation. the alcohol hides so well in this beer i am not sure if its because of the big chewy malty flavors or something different. i am really loving the fig/raisin quality that this beer has i believe the spiciness is plays nicely with the chocolate tones and rounds the whole thing out. It is a good thing this stuff is not readily available because its way to drinkable. solid beer i am glad i waited to crack this bad boy open.

Intriguing quad, although honesty didnt blow me away as much as my favorites. Appearance is a dark molasses- very pretty brown lacing with small carbonation bubbles. Aroma and taste are for me dominated by candied fruits with very mild bread undertones. A slight alcohol burn on the palate that disipitates rapidly when you swallow into a dry slightly bitter aftertaste. Overall clearly a complex and well crafted beer deserving of high marks, but def not the best in my book. I prefer rochefort, westvleteren, or even chimay blue.

UPDATED: JAN 24, 2015 Struise Pannepot 2014, uitgeschonken in origineel 33cl.

Poured from bottle, deep dark brown with low beige head. Aroma is mild and complex. Notes of dried fruit, herbs, spice, leather and some grass. Taste is as complex. Sweet, full and mature. Notes of dark bread, dried fruit, dates, madeira, and a trace of resin. More of an old sweet wine than a beer, but surely irresistible.
