4.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Wow this is by far the best Barley Wine out there. Zero soapiness and no flowery scents. Most BW are cough syrupy. This is a more hopped up version and the sweetness comes in the form of brown sugar and thick malts. The hops are not bittering but definetly present. A bit on the sweet side but its a great desert beer.

I tried to like this, but it’s the last Hair of the Dog for me. Maybe this is the perfect example of this style, maybe this is the precisely what the brewers were trying to accomplish. I just don’t like it. Thick, sweet, honey on the nose followed by thick, sweet, honey on the palate. Thick, sweet taste with absolutely no carbonation at all to cut the thick and sweet. I defer to those with more sophisticated taste, I could not enjoy this at all. I gave it a year on a dark, temp stable shelf and won’t be back.

Draught at the Hair of the Dog, Portland, OR. 2014 vintage.
Murky mid-brown colour with a creamy light tan head.
Strong malty aroma with sweetness, hoppy bitterness and dark fruits. Balanced. Awesome flavour... A perfect balance of malty sweetness, hoppy bitterness and dark fruitiness. I'm in heaven... No! I'm in Portland.

3.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
2013 Bottle from my cellar. Pours a light mahogany brown with a suspension appearance of tiny yeast particles. Nose is crystal malt, corn sugar, honey, and booze. Taste is similar with a sweet finish. Tastes like a good 2 year old Barleywine should.

Tap at Craftheads, Tokyo. Hazy reddish brown shade. Ring of head. Aroma has cherry, almond, caramel, a hint of chocolate and plenty of hop resinousness. Taste is a slight step down but still impressive, with a nice chewy texture. A tad underwhelming but still very good.

Several pours from a leaking 2004 magnum bottle... but still holding up well!! Pours deep copper, low carbonation. Held up very well in the nose: dates, sweet raisins, sweet desert wine, a tad madeira wine, caramel. Sweet body with bitter notes as from the middle, Taste is toffee, figs, dates... Interesting.
