COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Gulden Draak is a high fermentation beer with secondary fermentation. For the secondary fermentation, wine yeast is used. The white bottle, the black banner, the golden dragon and the red letters, constitute a stylish result that has no equal among the many Belgian special beers. Gulden Draak can be drunk as an aperitif or dessert, or whenever you have the time to sit back and relax. But this barley wine is also perfect with and in stews, especially the Ghent variety. It is also a plus in sauces for red meat, such as a bordelaise. It is particularly suited as a dessert beer, especially in combination with dark chocolate.

Really top notch. Spice and malt aromas with notes of caramel and bread tinged with dark fruit. Deep brown with a cream foam head. Sweet with spice and malt notes not a lot of bitterness. The beer is full bodied with lively active carbonation and a warm finish.

One of the best in the world, don't miss the chance to taste it. The right balance of alcohol and malts in a dark beer will enhance your senses. Don't be fooled with the smoothness, it has high ABV! ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Well well my my look what Santa left under my tree. Bottle pulled from 6 pack sampler. Table polish brown in the glass. Thin sheet of foam on 34% of the surface. This is pure candy store Belgian Ale. I get rock candy, after dinner port & grape soda in each sip. The finish is interesting: like biting into a ripe apple. Perhaps not the best pre-dinner brew in the fridge. Mrs Tiki steals a sip from my glass & man does that maple syrup loving Quebecois girl love this. Word to wise: save this one for dessert.

C’est costaud. Ca a du goût, un fort niveau d’alcool. Intéressant. J.en avais un meilleur souvenir tout de même. A retester dans d’autres conditions.

Classic ’massieve ale’ honouring the dragon on top of the Ghent belfry tower. The white bottles, though restyled nowadays, are immediately recognizable. Pours a deep hazy burgundy colour with wine-red hue under a yellowish light beige, moussy head which retains surprisingly well considering the ABV. Malty aroma with the unmistakable bitterish Van Steenberge yeastiness, impressions of caramel, honey, raisins, chocolate candy, (a little too much) iron probably hailing from head stabilizing agents, walnuts, cream, grass, bourbon, orange peel, dough, banana, cloves and something vaguely sulphuric (DMS). Sweet fruity-estery taste, almost cloying candi syrup, soft and fluffy mouthfeel, yeasty, banana, candied dates and candied orange, spicy accents, smooth caramelly and somewhat nutty malt sweetness, a bit chocolatey and honeyish as well, full, with an agreeable finish of lingering candi and malt sweetness nicely balanced with gentle grassy hop bitterishness and warming, liqueurish alcohol. Potent and rich, this is a perfectly acceptable winter warmer; I have always considered this the best of the regularly produced Van Steenberge brews and this tasting session has only affirmed this to me. It does have a little bit more elegance from tap and from the 75 cl bottlings, though. People who like this, do have to try the new Quadrupel version of it as well; I would not, however, recommend the lighter Vintage version over the original.

Pours opaque deep amber with a fat finger of light tan head, excellent retention, moderate lacing. (4/5) Nose is caramel/toffee, slight bubblegum, raisins, spices. (8/10) Taste is moderately strong sweet, mild bitter. (8/10) Full body, prickly sustained carbonation, and a mildly spicy boozy finish. (5/5) Another excellent BDSA - not quite as “christmas-y” as the 2012 Vicaris Winter I had immediately before, but still quite spicy and pleasantly warming. I was just reading the commercial description, and the idea of this in a stew or as a bordelaise base, makes me drool. I’ve got myself just about convinced I can taste the difference made by the wine yeast they use in the secondary fermentation, and am detecting a hint of vinous character as it warms. Just slightly better than the Vicaris, perhaps. (17/20)

UPDATED: DEC 21, 2014 Copper dark, interesting caramel with no sweetness, butterscotch, a hint of citrus. Very, very strong and mouthfeel. Belgium on the ride!
