I guess it’s possible that I’ve gotten used to Stone’s Arrogant Bastard to some degree, and my reaction to the oaked version isn’t quite as surprised and thrilled as my initial take on the original. Oaked Arrogant Bastard is very good, but it didn’t blow me away. Just like the original the oaked version pours a brilliant, dark copper color with thick, heavy lacing that clings to the glass right til the last sip. The same aromas and flavors are present that are there in the original Arrogant Bastard, rich malt and strong hops, citrus, rye, caramel and spice. The oak flavor is present throughout, but subtle. It adds to the original Arrogant Bastard presentation, but it’s hard to improve on a beer that’s close to perfect to begin with. Oaked Arrogant Bastard is a fine beer, but it’s no threat to the original.

Pours a brownish amber with a small beige head. Aroma is of caramel malt, floral piney hops with some citrus notes. Taste is sweet caramel malt, floral piney hops, some light toasted oak notes. Full body. Finish is sweet caramel malt, floral piney hops ending is sweet bitter hops with some lingering nutty oaked flavor.

AWISLguy (332) - Wisconsin, USA - MAY 18, 2012
Bottle from Toast in Augusta. Pours a clear orange-brown with a nice tan head and some bubbles. Some quickly-disappearing lacing. Aroma has earthy grass, pine needles, dark fruit (plums?) with caramel underneath. Taste is made up of a lot of resin plus sweet caramel, oak, sweet fruit and oranges, with some alcohol presence. Quite dry and finishes without a lot of length. I did not get a lot of the aging, beyond that it seemed to mute the "knock-you-in-the-face" ness of Arrogant.

Bottle, single from BevMo in La Mesa. Pours, a lot like arrogant bastard. Looks, a lot like arrogant bastard. Smells, a lot like arrogant bastard. Tastes, a lot like arrogant bastard. Seriously, I tried... hard, to tell a major difference between this one and the original. No dice. Oh well, it was still pretty damn good.
