3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20
UPDATED: MAY 21, 2014 2012 bottling. Fantastic stuff. Nice warm bourbon aroma. Great balance of bourbon, coffee and chocolate. Not as heavy on the bourbon as some of the others, but this does have some age on it. The coffee held up remarkably well, i thought that would fade out over time.
Re rate with 13 bottle. For some reason, this years batch didnít impress. A little thin, bourbon was a bit light. I guess when I had it the first time I was a bit new to the BA stout scene, and now Iíve had a lot that impress me more.
14 another year and Iím even less impressed. Thin and weak. If this were a shelf 6 pack Iíd put it next to black butte porter. Not worth the hype or price.

2015 (labeled 11.2%) and 2016 (12.4%) side-by-side and blind until after tasting notes. Pours black, thin, tan head. Aromas for both are chocolate, coffee, bourbon, vanilla, treacle, caramel. First real divergence from year-to-year comes through in the taste. 2015 - very smooth, semisweet chocolate, woody vanilla, big bourbon, espresso, fainter notes of anise, molasses, and toffee. 2016 - still smooth, coffee and bittersweet chocolate and vanilla much more at the forefront, more muted bourbon, oak, molasses, and caramel, some heat at the back of the throat that isn't present in the 2015; it doesn't detract at all, just a noticeable difference. After the initial side-by-side we poured a one-to-one mixture of the 2015 and 2016. They both were great individually, but the mixture was stupendous.

Pours thick black like motor oil. Aromas are somewhat subtle considering the powerhouse of flavour. Metric tons of chocolate with hints of coffee and bourbon. One of the best Stouts Iíve had.

From bottle. Very dark, almost black in colour with beige head that fades to lacing all round the glass. Coffee and chocolate aroma. Complex depth of flavour, bourbon taste comes through with coffee, liquorice and chocolate aftertaste. Good body and one to savour. Recommend that you try it.

4.7 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
This came to me highly hyped. Iím glad to say it lived up to it. Aromas of dark chocolate, coffee beans, bourbon, and roasty malts. Flavours, all in line with that. The 12.4% abv is very well hidden. Less boozy and hot than Nickelbrookís Kentucky Bastard (and you know I love that stout). It has a surprisingly silky smooth mouthfeel. This is one highly enjoyable stout.

Low head vanishing fast.
Borbon barrel is shining through in the aroma.
Briliant mouthfeel, good balance between sweet and bitter.
Coffee crawling in as the brew gets warmer.
There is no flat/off spot in the palate.

Pours black with light beige head. Aroma is chocolate, roasted, ashes and licorice. Flavor is roasted, oat, bourbon, vanilla, chocolate, heavy sweet, light bitter and licorice. Sticky, full, smooth and oily. Well balanced, well crafted. A great example of balanced barrel aging.
