4.9 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 20/20 nefarious (220) - Waterford, Michigan, USA - FEB 9, 2009
Growler from the brewery. Subtle nots of the usual stout atributes.....roasted malts but also a slight creamy cereal note to it. Oh, Thick black pour to it with a nice tan head. WOW this one really stands out!!!!! It really tates like chocolate and not the usual bitter chocolate but actually milk chocolate! It so rich and creamy but not even the slightest bit too sweet. Oh and it soooooo thick on the palate.....and just ever so slightly at the end does the coffee and malts come out. Truly a wonderful surprise. I was not expecting it at all. i will kill this growler by myself tonight. Amazing
3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 hopdog (6940) - Lansdale, Pennsylvania, USA - JAN 3, 2009
On tap at the Dragonmead Brew Pub. Gotta love the name. Poured a medium brown color with a small sized off white head. Aromas of chocolate, lactose, and some coffee. Tastes of chocolate, vanilla, some roast, lactose and coffee. The milk chocolate was definitely there.
3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 tmongoose (335) - Louisville, Kentucky, USA - NOV 27, 2007
most of the chocolate stouts i have tasted usually have a coffee flavor. well this one escaped that and i went one step over. this is truly a chocolate stout and a good creamy texture. when you are feeling the need for something different mix this with the raspberry wheat. turned this into a very good dessert beer. i loved it...but then taste in in the buds of the beholder. i was very happy with this beer
3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 Sammy (5881) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - FEB 1, 2007
I seek out these chocolate stouts, and this one was no exception, driving through sleet and bypassing sidelined cars to get to this brewpub. A chocolate and lactose aroma, a brown milkshake in appearance with lace. Bold carbonation and bittersweet chocolate.
3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 Silphium (2711) - East Lansing, Michigan, USA - OCT 17, 2005
On tap at Dragonmead. Deep red-brown body that filters most but not all light; thin buff-colored head. Sweet milk chocolate aroma, lactose, and coffee. The milk sugar dominates the palate, reminding me of tasting lactose right out of the plastic container in high school biology class. The chocolate, coffee, and roasted notes don’t quite congeal with the lactose, but I still enjoyed the flavor. I can’t knock milk stouts.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 walleye (944) - Sterling Heights, Michigan, USA - SEP 13, 2005
from the tap had this a couple off months ago. poured black with a brown head that didn’t last very long some lacing. aroma chocolate the bitter sweet kind, malts, and some coffee. flavor the blend of the malts and choloate were nice the coffee flavor didn’t add anything to it though tasted like cheap coffee other than that not to bad of a beer
3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20 Brad (364) - Berkley, Michigan, USA - JUL 19, 2005
On tap at brewery: Was hoping this would already be in here, I hate adding beers without all the necessary information. Anyway, Pours an oily opaque black with a receding brown head, leaves moderate lacing. Upon smelling this beer I was wondering, "where’s the chocolate?" Nose was mostly subtle mocha coffee and roasted malts. Flavor finally reveals some chocolate and its the dark bitter kind, hops are there but they are watered down and underbalanced with the stronger chocolate flavor. Medium/heavy mouthfeel and finishes with a nice hoppy bitterness which unfortunately turns rather sour deeper into the finish.
