3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 Beerlando (3276) - Orlando, Florida, USA - AUG 31, 2010
750ml bottle, Batch 1, dated 9/18/2005 and consumed 5 years later in August 2010. Thanks to cquiroga for sharing this rarity that I never thought I’d get to try. Pouring nearly pitch black, with just a subtle glint of crimson showing when strongly backlit, the body sports a small blanket of smooth, light brown foam at the head. The lasting cap gives jagged ribbons and small, organic splotches of lacing. Rich, dense aromatics kick off with stewed figs, raisin bread, oxidized caramel, and sweet, earthy molasses. Roasted barley grain and chocolaty, toasty mocha offer a welcomed balancing effect. Flavors are largely the same, strongly leaning towards dark, stewed fruits with choco-coffee roast, earthy molasses, oxidized cocoa and caramel. There’s a big of a fudge-like quality as well. The palate is pretty creamy up front and medium-full in stature, finishing semi-dry and perhaps a little bit chalky. Overall, it’s still very good, even at this advanced age. I don’t doubt, however, that this was once much more pulled together and refined. It reminds me a lot of Expedition of approximately the same age. I’d bet that this stuff was killer at about 1-2 years.
3.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 theisti (2371) - Leawood, Kansas, USA - JUN 14, 2010
750 ml bottle graciosuly shared by beastiefan2k. Pour is dark brown, black with a thinnish tan head. Oily texture leaves behind pronounced legs on the glass. Looks like an espresso pour. Aroma of oily roast, mild soy and some straw. Interesting, though a bit muted. Taste is the sharp roast, followed close behind by the soy and the silky grain. The class of this beer is the balance and integration of the flavors. Palate is medium to heavy bodied, more or less flat, oily and silky mouthfeel. Very smooth. A bit of soy in the long finish. Nice one, thanks Eugene.
4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 mreusch (851) - Olathe, Kansas, USA - JUN 10, 2010
750ml bottle, with a big thanks to Beastiefan2k for sharing. Pours dark brown/black with a minimal tan head, no lacing. Aroma has oats, a real European roasty malt thing going on, chocolate, a little coffee, some dark fruit, but mostly that lovely roasty malt thing. Flavor is more of the same, with more roasty malts, chocolate, coffee, and a little vanilla. This one is gentle yet diverse, and just excellent. Thank you, thank you Eugene for sharing this long time Want list beer, it did not disappoint!
