COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Maharaja is derived from the sanskrit words mahat, - "great" and rajan - "king". Much like its namesake, this imperial IPA is regal, intense and mighty. With hops and malts as his servants, he rules both with a heavy hand. The Maharaja flaunts his authority over a deranged amount of hops: tangy, vibrant and pungent along with an insane amount of malted barley - fashioning a dark amber hue and exquisite malt essence. This newest Avery Dictator completes the "Dictator Series" joining the likes of The Kaiser & The Czar. Be aware that The Maharaja is a limited release only available for the summer. Welcome to his kingdom!

Editor’s Note: the 2007 version was 9.78%.

On tap at Rattle N Hum. Pour is slightly hazy orange with an off-white head. Aroma is huge! Caramel malts, citrus, pine needles and herbal hops. Flavor is strong on the carmel/honey sweetness with a nice backbone of bitter herbal hops. Alcohol is well hidden, good carbonation levels.

Smells incredibly piney/leafy with some very strong citrussy/fruity notes as well. Pours into a dark amber color with a moderate foam top. Insanely bitter hop bite followed by an intense spicy, leafy, earthy finish. Very light flavors of citrus and fruit with a incredibly subtle malt background. Overall, this is a complete hop monster, if you are a fan of insanely hoppy/bitter beers, you NEED to try this. This is my kinda beer. A+ rating.

I tried batch 13, almost a year old now. I loved it. Suspect it would be even better if fresh. Well worth a try. I am adding it to my short list of favorites. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Draft at the Brick Store Beer pub in Decatur Georgia. Red to old gold colored beer. Hoppy citrus aroma and taste. Dry and medium bodied. A very good IPA

Originally rated 08/22/12Pours surprisingly dark, like there’s some orange, but it’s definitely a lot browner than any of the Imperial IPA’s I’ve seen lately. It has a nice fluffy head that disappears pretty quick, but leaves lots of lacing. In the aroma there are tons of fruity hops: tangerine, light grapefruit, you can really smell some caramel/dates. Also, I can pick out some pineapple. There’s very little on the piny aroma, again I can detect some bitterness of a grapefruit though. In Taste, it comes off with all fruity hop at first, then you get legitimate caramel taste. And it blends with the body of the beer so that it seriously feels like caramel; definitely quite viscous. Huge hop bitterness stabs your tongue like the Maharaja does to Indie with that voodoo doll in Temple of Doom. I can taste some alcohol as that kinda fades, and then piny hop flavour and bitterness come in and ride out the most of the rest of the taste. Not as much fruit taste as is in the aroma, but I think it could be argued that there is some grapefruit rind quality present in the hop bitterness. Again the mouthfeel really works for this beer, where its thick and matches that caramel up front, and the tasty flavour of the alcohol. As it warms, I‘m surprised to get more of the citrusy hop flavour.

The word is intense. The aromatics jump out of the glass. Fresh hoppiness and citrus scents exude freshness. Thick headed, heavy lacing, and full bodied. Bitter citrus and hop flavors lead to a long, impressive finish. Not for the faint of heart.

Pours a reddish golden color with white lacing. The nose is fairly vibrant with notes of pine and grapefruit. The palate definitely has a pine malt driven boldness up front (good candy and spice notes) with a lingering bitter finish. Bold mid palate and a great beer to sip on. Great little dessert beer. Probably better to shy away from on hot days.

Release 15. Winter 11/12. Pours clear amber with a thick fluffy white head. Aroma is grapefruit, floral, caramel, cherry, plum, peach. Taste is citrus, spicy, bitter orange peel, lots of fruit (with pits; cherry, plum, peach). Medium carbonation. Light, creamy mouth feel. Delicious.
