4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 Gypsy19 (728) - USA - OCT 16, 2009
500 ml. from the Davis Co-Op ($8.50). Pours opaque black with a generous, dense brown head that stays. Aroma is excellent: Lots of gourmet coffee in the aroma, chocolate, brown sugar, and west coast hops as well. Ooh, the coffee really hits home in the flavor. Underneath lies unsweetened chocolate, and blackened roast malt. Good hop counterpoint rounds this baby out. Alcohol is very mild. Ashy, resin/tar/smoke finish coats the mouth and lingers for minutes. Semi-full mouthfeel, medium viscosity. Could’ve had just a pinch more sweetness for me, but no one’s complaining here. Damn, another great selection by my friends at Nøgne Ø! There’s something to be said about how round this beer is; it’s finished, it’s complete; there are no loose ends to tie up - just nice in all aspects and graceful for its size. Not as mindblowing as Dark Horizon, but still gorgeous and dangerously drinkable; I could actually session this, no bullshit. Overall, world class.
3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 DavoleBomb (1143) - Pennsylvania, USA - MAY 26, 2012
Poured into a snifter.
4.0 A: Black color. About two and a half fingers of medium brown, frothy/creamy head. Retention is good and a good sized ring of lacing is left behind.
4.5 S: Smells wonderful! Caramel and chocolate form layer after layer after layer. It could be argued that the caramel is lightly tangy. Noticeable vanilla component. Silky, but potent, roastiness. Simply put, it smells rich, like a high quality cup of hot chocolate. Something along the lines of plum and prune fruitiness. Light herbal and citrusy hoppiness.
4.0 T: Tastes like it smells. Loads of caramel. Almost as much chocolate. Big, silky supple roastiness. Light vanilla. Hints of dark fruits. Very faint bitterness along with a very mild herbal hop flavor. Despite it’s resemblance to the nose, it doesn’t impress me as much, though it is still quite tasty.
4.0 M: Heavier medium body. Good moderate carbonation. Nice creaminess to this.
4.0 D: Solid imperial stout. I wish this was cheaper because if it was I would definitely include it in my rotation. Good beer.

4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 neongolden (61) - Ontario, CANADA - MAY 25, 2012
(500mL Aug 2011 bottle from LCBO) Poured cellar temp, a pitch black beer with a huge dense, creamy pillow of a head that filled up my Duvel tulip and then some. Big complex aroma, roasted coffee, milk chocolate, vanilla, sweet dark fruit, a bit of soya or brine, earth. Flavour very sweet at the outset, like heavily sugared cold coffee, cocoa powder, bit of preserved fruit, soya sauce, creamy oatiness, finishes with a bit of pine hop and coffee bitterness, ends quite dry with a bit of ash. Rich but medium-full of body, nice oat character, soft carbonation, balanced, alcohol mostly hidden. Quality imperial stout.

En riktigt god stout. Kaffe och choklad. Hade nog blivit ännu godare om man lagret några år.

Very lucky to have got this on tap! A sensational beer! Nogne Imperial Stout 9%, has that classic chocolate and coffee aroma, such a dark colour which is complimented by a thick and full body! Tastes of a burnt chocolate with a bitter aftertone... A cracking Imperial Stout!
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Cunningham (1941) - Halden, NORWAY - MAY 13, 2012
Black colour with a beige head. Aroma of cohcolate, coffe and vanilla. Flavour are about the same. And the alchohol does not come shining through that good on this one. A real winter varmer. [Bottle from Vinmonopolet in Halden, Norway]
3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 piscator34 (1644) - Winnipeg, Manitoba, CANADA - MAY 13, 2012
Bottled sample. Black in colour with medium carbonation. Aromas are of dark roast coffee, milk chocolate, and ash. Acidic coffee is the dominant flavour, along with chocolate milk powder, coal, and a bit of green hop on the finsih. Light bodied for the style, but quite drinkable. A solid imperial stout overall.
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20 Bendrixian (458) - Halifax, Nova Scotia, CANADA - MAY 12, 2012
Tan coloured head. dark jet black colour. Aroma is weird, has a sort of brine or salty note that I can’t place. it also has a big roasted aroma, coffee bean, dark chocolate but again leather or funk. i get more of that saltyness in the flavour, some hoppy notes, roast, and has a surprising amount of acidity. it is an interesting brew, tasty, and different in a way that i can’t place.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 Vestergaard (27) - Aarhus C, DENMARK - MAY 10, 2012
2010 Bottle, 50cl. Pitch black. Lovely brown head, little boozy aroma with prominent coffee. Taste is well balanced coffee and chocolate, but nothing out of the ordinary. The taste is a little intese for the lack of thickness. Great beer at a low price.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 bunget (139) - Ottawa, Ontario, CANADA - MAY 7, 2012
500ml bottle. Peach black body with a huge mocha head, excellent retention and layered lacing.
Aroma of dark chocolate, coffee, vanilla, bread, prunes, brown sugar, caramel, some hops freshness.
Taste is super astringent, tons of bitterness, with a hint of sweetness finish. After the first sip the rebel taste settles down and becomes a more quiet imperial stout. Unusual. Respectful 75 IBU.
