We think the Russian tsar would have liked his stout this way. A dark, rich ale in which a generous sweetness with roasted malt bitterness. Serving temp.10°C/50°F. Great with vanilla ice cream or dark chocolate.

Ingredients: Maris Otter, Munich, roasted barley, oat, black, and chocolate malt; Columbus and Crystal hops; English ale yeast, and our local Grimstad water.

23°P,75 IBU, 9% ABV.

Imperial Stout fra Nøgne Ø er en tett og helt svart ale med stor fyldighet. Smaken domineres av kaffe, sjokolade, lær og tørket frukt. Vi synes den passer bra til mørk sjokolade og kraftige desserter.

Wow...what black tar pit did this stuff crawl out from? Seriously pitch dark in pour with a dark brown (almost black) head resting foamily atop...no light dwells within. Sickly sweet smell...like rummy raisins and cream. Soft and slightly fuzzy on the tongue. This is one very interesting stout that i’m actually having a hard time trying to pin down flavours on...it has hints of chocolate, roasted barley, coffee, etc. all the usual suspects. But there is an overall dryness that supercedes all of those flavours and in turn, welds it into something slightly spectacular. Imagine the dryness of white wine and the smokiness of a good barrel-aged whiskey crossed with the creaminess of ice cream (specifically vanilla...not chocolate, surprisingly). What more can i say? Simply amazing and unique...might give Old Rasputin a run for it’s money.

Black color, big brown head. Aroma of roasted malt, milk chocolate, dried fruits, hint of licorice and leather. Taste is full of chocolate with notes of coffee, licorice, dark fruits, hint of citrus - sweet with subtle dryness and bitter roasty finish. Full body and average carbonation, gently warming alcohol burn in finish. Very nice stout, really enjoyed it.

Bottled. A really nice IS. Aroma is beautiful dark chocolate, roasted malt, espresso. Beige to brown espresso thick head. Color is so dark and thick, my, Iphone flash light was unable to penetrate it. Taste is great. Roasted malt, dark chocolate, espresso, alcohol warming. A really well made IS.

Cellar temperature and into a shallow chalice. Like used engine oil in the glass with a tight and compact tannish crown that weaves a fine web of lace. Thick and rich aroma of liquorice root, mocha and Belgian chocolate, kelp and fresh strapped leather, roasted coffee bean and damp loam. Very nice. Unexpectedly weedy and bitter on the palate. That 75 IBU’s shows its heady touch. Malty, medium bodied, with a creaminess akin to that of chocolate icecream. The aroma pitches into the flavour well with all of it culminating in the aftertaste, tickling and eagerly nudging the olfactories. At 9.0% ABV there is just a faint warmth making it a dangerously swift quaffer. Sweet and mildly puckering but balanced and charming. A touch of vanillin, beef jerky, charred wood, Worcestershire sauce filters in giving it plenty of complexity. Chalky feel to the finish also with a puff of ever-present smoke. Left quite impressed. I could go another, and then some. A very well made Impy! (50cL, Batch No. 978, BB 04/06/17, The Liquor Shed, Jandakot)

Bottle. Blavk with a thick brown head. Big roasted malt/coffee/cocoa aroma. Nice thick, slightly bitter roasted flavor that fades slowly into a strong unsweetened coffee flavor that lingers for a while. Really smooth feel. Really well done.

Old rating rerated 08.04.2014, 0,5l bottle (batch #268 brewed 25.11.2006) @ home:
Big brown creamy longlasting head. Aroma is slightly rich and sweet, dark malts, licorice, dark sugar, coffee, chocolate, roasted grain, caramel, hay, dark fruits, hints of butterscotch. Taste is slightly sour-ish roasted, dark malts, espresso, hay, licorice, burnt grain, caramel, cocoa, grass, dark fruits, dark sugar, paper. Medium bitterness, slightly dry mouthfeel. Damn, this one has evolved very nice for the last 7,5 years, while it’s too raw and unbalanced when it’s fresh. Lovely!

(Bottle): Pours pitch black with a tan head. Aroma of chocolate, roasted malt, dark fruits, milky coffee, leather, smoke, vanilla, bread. Flavour is a big sweet bomb of chocolate and dark fruit flavours initially but gives way to a malty, creamy, biscuity middle with a smokey, leather and surprisingly - somewhat hoppy finish. Balance is perfect, body is full & creamy. Absolutely love Nogne O beers and this one has blown me away.

Bottle 50 cl. Batch 1101.
Black, with brown head. Malty, caramel, toast, roasty, chocolate, and a touch of citrus. Moderate sweet and bitter taste. Finishing off with pouring in the sediments gives it a rough, but nice, extra bitterness.

Pours pitch black with a small tan fizz. Smells of licorice or anise, without the typical roast character of imperial stouts. Taste is licorice, subtle hints of fruit and molasses. Full-bodied with a smooth texture and mild mouth-carbonation, Nøgne Ø Imperial Stout finishes with a very subtle tangy fruitiness.
