COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
We think the Russian tsar would have liked his stout this way. A dark, rich ale in which a generous sweetness with roasted malt bitterness. Serving temp.10°C/50°F. Great with vanilla ice cream or dark chocolate.

Ingredients: Maris Otter, Munich, roasted barley, oat, black, and chocolate malt; Columbus and Crystal hops; English ale yeast, and our local Grimstad water.

23°P,75 IBU, 9% ABV.

Imperial Stout fra Nøgne Ø er en tett og helt svart ale med stor fyldighet. Smaken domineres av kaffe, sjokolade, lær og tørket frukt. Vi synes den passer bra til mørk sjokolade og kraftige desserter.

Wow...what black tar pit did this stuff crawl out from? Seriously pitch dark in pour with a dark brown (almost black) head resting foamily atop...no light dwells within. Sickly sweet smell...like rummy raisins and cream. Soft and slightly fuzzy on the tongue. This is one very interesting stout that i’m actually having a hard time trying to pin down flavours on...it has hints of chocolate, roasted barley, coffee, etc. all the usual suspects. But there is an overall dryness that supercedes all of those flavours and in turn, welds it into something slightly spectacular. Imagine the dryness of white wine and the smokiness of a good barrel-aged whiskey crossed with the creaminess of ice cream (specifically vanilla...not chocolate, surprisingly). What more can i say? Simply amazing and unique...might give Old Rasputin a run for it’s money.

50cl bottle@home. Approx 12 celcius. Brewed October 14. Truly an Imperial Stout! Jet black with an ample brown head subsiding into a low carbonated deeply complex, thick stout. Aroma of malt, coffee and liquorice but also the sweetness which is prevalent in this beer. One aspect I really enjoy is the complexity of the constantly changing taste: One sip is liquorice, the next is malt, the next is bitter, the next is sweet, the next is smoked...it holds such a range! For that I hold it as a truly great stout mong equals though it is a bit sweet for my taste. Wonder how it ages? Must try...I’ll be back in years to come:-)

Bottle @ home. BBB was 12. Nov. 2012, batch 327. Aroma of plums, coffee, chocolate, some alcohol, sweetness. Black with tiny tan head, none lasting. Light sweetness, malt bitterness, alcohol sweetness, vinous. Full body, smooth texture, soft carbonation, malty finish.

Black with brown head. Aromas of roasted malts, some chocolate, licorice, plums and raisins, some subtle alcohol notes as well. Medium sweet, could be more bitter. Full bodied with oily texture, especially when it warms up. A very good imperial stout.

6th Feb 2015: large sample from a bottle in De Bierboom (Brugge). Jet black body with a good tanned topping. Malts all the way here: roasted malts rule the nose and flavours with dark chocolate, coffee and liquorice being the main players in the aroma and taste. Very pleasant and far to easy to drink at 9% ABV. Another fine beer from these guys.

Bottle in Craft & Dough, Sheffield. Pours inky black with a tan head. Rich and full flavoured. Starts quite spicy before chocolate, coffee and liquorice. Some blackcurrant notes too. Thick oily texture. Excellent.

Pours black with a big brown head. Sweet aroma with notes of liquorice, light bourbon, roasted malt. Flavor is moderate to heavy sweet and bitter, again some liquorice, chocolate and coffee. Very well balanced. Good!

Bottle. Pours pitch black with lasting fine small brown head. Aroma has smoky chilis, chipotle? Toasty malts, dark chocolate, dry coffee, sweet liquorice and some salty umami too. Taste is quite sweet. Caramel, toasty, dark dried fruits, prunes. Sweet liquorice and burnt sugar Full bodied and some bitter hops along some dark rich chocolate in finish. A nice go-to textbook imperial stout with well hidden ABV.

Bottle. Pours pitch black. Sweet/sour nose, with notes of chocolate and somehow quite umami-meaty. Chocolaty, dark roast with herbal bitternes. Round, smooth and very full-bodied. Yum!

0.5L bottle, poured into a snifter. The aroma is initially an abundant earthy, woody, and spicy blend that fades into a smokey, roasted, chocolate and tobacco note. Aromas of raisin come in late with cranberry and wood joining in by the very end. There’s also a very light alcohol hint on the nose. The dark, cola-brown beer has a viscous and oily look with some sediment lingering on the bottom of the glass. A brown, sudsy head tops the beer, but dissipates to a thin ring with a wispy surface and only hints of a runny lace are left behind. The taste is a medium / medium-high bittersweet with slightly more bitter than sweet, but a pleasant balance is struck overall. The texture is slick and oily with a light, soft, fuzzy carbonation. The medium-full body is chocolaty and smokey with touches of sweet tobacco leaves. It finish clean with a clove spiciness and a roasted quality. The aftertaste is dry and chalky with wood ash flavoring along with a roasted quality, and a light spicy touch.
